The All Progressives Congress (APC) has received new members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Jigawa State, following a grassroots political mobilisation organised in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election bid.
The defectors announced their decision at Garun Gabas Ward in Malam Madori Local Government Area during the inauguration of a campaign office for the Tinubu Movement for Sustainable Governance Foundation, popularly known as the ‘Tinubu Must Stay Movement’. The event was led by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, who also serves as Chairman of the movement’s Board of Trustees and National Coordinator.
The new APC members were received by Abdullahi alongside leaders of the party in Malam Madori Local Government Area. Explaining their decision to leave their former political parties, the defectors reportedly pointed to development interventions and improvements in their communities.
They specifically acknowledged projects facilitated through NITDA, saying the initiatives had strengthened their confidence in the development agenda of the Tinubu administration. However, the exact number of people who defected was not disclosed in the report.
The inauguration attracted APC chieftains, community leaders, women, youths and other supporters, who took to the streets chanting the movement’s slogan, ‘Tinubu Must Stay’. Speaking at the gathering, Abdullahi said the movement was expanding its grassroots presence to educate citizens about the Federal Government’s policies and encourage support for the administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He highlighted government interventions in education, agriculture, food security, national security, digital literacy and healthcare, describing them as important components of the administration’s economic and development agenda.
Abdullahi also argued that maintaining policy consistency would be important for Nigeria’s long-term economic development, citing countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia as examples of nations that had pursued sustained reforms. He urged residents to support Tinubu’s anticipated second-term bid in 2027.
The APC chairman in Malam Madori Local Government Area, Alhaji Tanko Ahmad, commended Abdullahi for facilitating digital infrastructure projects in the community. He particularly highlighted the Information and Communication Technology Development Centre at Government Secondary School, Garun Gabas, describing the facility as an intervention aimed at improving students’ access to digital education and skills. Meanwhile, the movement’s national coordinator announced plans to empower another 200 women in Garun Gabas Ward.
He said the proposed intervention would build on an earlier empowerment programme in Hadejia, where beneficiaries reportedly received financial assistance, sewing machines, bakery equipment, agricultural inputs and other support for small businesses. The movement also said it would continue supporting women, young people, children and persons with disabilities through economic empowerment and educational assistance.
The convener of the movement in Garun Gabas, Engineer Hashim Suleiman, described the turnout as encouraging and said the initiative would extend its activities to more communities. He explained that the movement had started its activities in the United Kingdom, proceeded to Abuja and was now establishing structures at the grassroots level in Nigeria.
The Jigawa event forms part of the growing political mobilisation by different groups and parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. While the APC continues to receive defectors in parts of the country, the latest development in Garun Gabas represents a local political realignment rather than evidence of a statewide shift in party allegiance.
