OSUN ON BRINK OF THREE-DAY LABOUR SHUTDOWN AS NLC SETS NOVEMBER 8 STRIKE DATE OVER LG FUNDS
By NaijaParrot | November 2, 2026
OSOGBO, OSUN STATE
Osun State could face significant disruption from November 8 as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State Council, has announced plans for a three-day sympathy strike over the continued withholding and disputed disbursement of statutory allocations meant for local government councils. The planned industrial action is scheduled to begin at midnight on Sunday, November 8, and end at midnight on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. The Congress has also announced peaceful picketing of United Bank for Africa (UBA) branches across the state from Thursday, November 12, if the dispute remains unresolved. The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the NLC State Executive Council and signed by its Chairman, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo.
NLC SAYS LOCAL GOVERNMENT FUNDING CRISIS MUST END
The labour organisation expressed concern that the prolonged uncertainty surrounding local government allocations had weakened the councils’ ability to perform their constitutional responsibilities and meet their financial obligations to workers. The Congress had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding urgent intervention to resolve the funding dispute. It warned that failure to address the matter within the stipulated period would lead to the proposed industrial action. The NLC maintained that local government workers should not continue to bear the consequences of the unresolved disagreement over the administration and disbursement of council funds.
ADELEKE’S SALARY INTERVENTION NOT ENOUGH, SAYS NLC
The Congress acknowledged Governor Ademola Adeleke’s intervention in ensuring that local government workers receive their net salaries without deductions.
However, it argued that the intervention could not replace the regular release of statutory allocations to local government councils, insisting that the councils require access to their funds to function effectively and fulfil their obligations.
UBA BRANCHES TO FACE PEACEFUL PICKETING
Beyond the three-day strike, the NLC announced that peaceful picketing of UBA branches across Osun State would commence on Thursday, November 12.
The planned action forms part of the Congress’s demand for an end to what it described as the continued withholding and disputed disbursement of local government statutory allocations.
The union also disclosed that mobilisation was ongoing with the support of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and South-West councils to encourage participation in the planned activities.
RESIDENTS URGED TO NOTE POSSIBLE DISRUPTIONS
Although the NLC stressed that its planned actions were not intended to antagonise the people of Osun, a strike of this nature could affect public services and other activities across the state, depending on the level of participation.
The Congress described the proposed industrial action as a lawful response to the prolonged difficulties confronting local government workers and called on both the Federal and Osun State governments to urgently resolve the dispute.
With November 8 approaching, attention will be on whether the relevant authorities can reach a resolution before the proposed strike begins.
The NLC’s position is that industrial harmony cannot be sustained while workers’ welfare and the financial stability of local government councils remain uncertain.
