The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that two individuals suspected of having Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Adamawa State have tested negative after undergoing two rounds of laboratory testing.

The confirmation has eased concerns over a possible spread of the disease to the North-East, with the agency stressing that no laboratory-confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Adamawa. In a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, the NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, disclosed that samples collected from the two individuals returned negative results after two separate rounds of testing.

According to the NCDC, the Adamawa State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre received a report in the early hours of October 30, following the identification of two individuals presenting with symptoms suggestive of Ebola. The individuals were immediately isolated, while samples were collected for laboratory investigations to establish the actual cause of their illnesses.

Public health measures were also initiated as authorities worked to investigate the situation and prevent any potential risk to the wider community.

Dr Idris clarified that the negative results mean Adamawa currently has no laboratory-confirmed Ebola infection. He added that the previously confirmed index case in the Federal Capital Territory remains the only laboratory-confirmed Ebola case reported in Nigeria.

The NCDC also commended the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health and the state’s public health team for their prompt response, assuring residents that it would continue providing technical support to strengthen disease surveillance and response operations.

The agency has urged Nigerians to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information or speculation about the disease. It advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding, particularly following possible exposure, to seek immediate medical attention.

Members of the public were also advised to disclose relevant travel and contact histories to healthcare workers and avoid self-medication. The NCDC said it would continue working with the Adamawa State Government and other relevant stakeholders to monitor the situation and provide updates based on verified information.
