WIKE BOASTS 2027 ELECTION WILL BE EASIER, SAYS HE HAS REMOVED ALL OBSTACLES IN FCT, RIVERS

 ABUJA, NIGERIA —

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the 2027 general election will be easier for his political camp, declaring that he will coordinate President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in the FCT and Rivers State. Wike made the declaration on Monday, October 12, during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Rainbow Coalition in Abuja, where political figures from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) discussed plans to mobilise support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the meeting, Wike said preparations were underway to ensure the success of the campaign in the two locations. He described himself as the field commander for Tinubu’s campaign in the FCT and maintained that the necessary arrangements were being made to achieve the coalition’s objectives. “The election will be easier for us,” Wike said, explaining that his responsibility would cover both the FCT and Rivers State. He added that he had already addressed potential obstacles to the campaign. “Everything that is required, every obstacle, I have already removed them,” the minister declared.

The meeting brought together political stakeholders from both the APC and PDP, including party leaders, serving and former lawmakers, National Assembly candidates and representatives from the FCT’s six area councils. Wike urged participants to put aside their party differences and work towards a common objective of securing Tinubu’s re-election. He said the coalition had agreed to support Tinubu for president, while also backing selected APC candidates contesting National Assembly seats in the FCT. Reports from the meeting indicated that some PDP candidates for National Assembly seats in the territory declared support for their APC counterparts, highlighting the cross-party nature of the political arrangement.

The former Rivers State governor also referred to the 2024 Edo State governorship election, claiming that cooperation between elements of the PDP and APC contributed to the outcome. Wike said the political alliance was formed to prevent former Governor Godwin Obaseki from producing his preferred successor. He maintained that cross-party alliances could influence electoral outcomes when politicians agreed to pursue a shared objective. His account represents his explanation of the political strategy behind the Edo election.

Wike’s latest declaration comes after he previously said he should leave his ministerial position if Tinubu fails to win the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election. His renewed commitment to coordinating the campaign in both locations places him at the centre of efforts to build political support for Tinubu beyond traditional party lines. However, Wike’s confidence reflects his political assessment and campaign plans; the eventual outcome will be determined by voters at the polls. The Independent National Electoral Commission’s preparations and the conduct of a credible election will remain important to the process as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
