TINUBU SUPPORT GROUP DENIES APC-APGA DEAL, INSISTS ON SUPPORT FOR APC CANDIDATES IN ANAMBRA

AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE — The Tinubu Support Group (TSG) in the South-East has rejected claims of an electoral alliance between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), insisting that its members will support President Bola Tinubu and APC candidates in the 2027 general elections. The group made its position known during a rally held in Awka, Anambra State, over the weekend, declaring that its members would vote for APC candidates across all elective positions rather than support an arrangement that favours Tinubu for president while APGA retains other positions.
The rally was organised by Sir Paul Chukwuma, an APC chieftain and Deputy Coordinator of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council in the South-East. Speaking at the event, Chukwuma urged APC members to remain loyal to their party, rejecting the suggestion that cooperation between Tinubu and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo translates into an electoral partnership between APC and APGA. He maintained that the group’s position was to support APC candidates at every level of the 2027 elections. According to Chukwuma, the slogan “progressives are working together” was being used by APGA in a way he considered misleading. He told supporters that the group’s position was clear: APC from top to bottom.
The disagreement comes amid political discussions surrounding Soludo’s inclusion in the APC Presidential Campaign Council as the state coordinator for Tinubu’s re-election campaign. Soludo, who is also a prominent APGA leader, has promoted the idea of progressive cooperation between political actors at the state and federal levels. However, the Tinubu Support Group insists that such cooperation should not be interpreted as an agreement to support APGA candidates in legislative elections across Anambra State.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu and APC senatorial candidate for Anambra Central Uche Ekwunife were among the prominent party figures who addressed participants at the rally. Kalu expressed confidence in Tinubu’s prospects in the South-East, arguing that the President’s policies and activities in the region could influence support for his re-election bid. The speakers urged APC members to mobilise support for Tinubu and the party’s candidates contesting Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats. The rally attracted participants from Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu and Abia states, according to reports. APGA’S POSITION ON THE DISPUTE The debate reflects a broader disagreement over what the phrase “progressives are working together” means for the 2027 elections. In April 2026, Chinedu Obigwe, National Coordinator of APGA’s Media Warriors Forum, clarified that the party’s support for Tinubu’s re-election did not extend to APC candidates contesting legislative seats in Anambra. Obigwe said APGA intended to field its own candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly, while supporting Tinubu in the presidential election. His position highlights the distinction between cooperation with the Federal Government and a formal electoral alliance between the two parties.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the competing positions reveal a dispute over whether support for Tinubu should also translate into support for APC candidates in Anambra State. While the Tinubu Support Group is urging voters to back APC candidates across the ballot, APGA representatives have maintained that support for the President does not mean surrendering the party’s legislative ambitions. The eventual voting decisions of Anambra residents will determine how these competing political strategies translate into electoral outcomes.
