TINUBU HAILS EFCC OVER ₦1.23TRN RECOVERIES, 10,872 CONVICTIONS IN 34 MONTHS

  ABUJA, NIGERIA —

 President Bola Tinubu has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for recovering assets worth approximately ₦1.23 trillion and securing 10,872 convictions within 34 months. Tinubu gave the commendation on Tuesday through Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who represented him at the opening of the eighth EFCC and National Judicial Institute (NJI) workshop for judges and justices in Abuja.

The President said the commission had recorded significant progress in tackling financial crimes, recovering illicit assets and strengthening Nigeria’s standing in the international financial system. He also commended the EFCC for its efforts to combat cryptocurrency fraud and recover virtual assets, noting the growing need for law-enforcement agencies to adapt to emerging technologies used by criminals. Tinubu called for stronger cooperation among anti-corruption agencies, the judiciary and other relevant institutions to improve the investigation and prosecution of financial crimes.

 Figures released by the commission show that the recoveries and convictions cover the first 34 months of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede’s tenure, from October 2023 to July 2026. During the period, the commission reported:

 * ₦1.233 trillion recovered in naira-denominated assets and funds.

* $684.48 million recovered in US dollars.

* 10,872 convictions secured.

* 14,476 cases filed in court.

* 39,615 cases investigated.

* 49,673 petitions received. The figures reflect the commission’s reported enforcement activities, including investigations and prosecutions involving cybercrime, money laundering, bank fraud and other financial offences.

 The President also highlighted the importance of tackling technology-driven offences, particularly cryptocurrency fraud and other crimes involving digital assets. The growing use of blockchain technology and artificial intelligence has created new challenges for investigators, prosecutors and the courts. The EFCC has emphasised the need to strengthen intelligence gathering, forensic investigations and cooperation with domestic and international partners to improve its response to increasingly sophisticated financial crimes.

 The three-day workshop is themed “Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Financial Crimes in a Digital Age.” The programme brings together judicial officers and other stakeholders to discuss ways to improve the handling of financial crime cases, including digital evidence, asset recovery and prosecution procedures. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has also called for more efficient judicial processes, warning that prolonged trials and repeated adjournments can undermine the effective prosecution of complex financial crime cases.

Tinubu’s commendation places the EFCC’s reported recoveries and convictions at the centre of the Federal Government’s anti-corruption agenda. However, the long-term impact of these efforts will also depend on transparent management of recovered assets, accountability, effective prosecution and the timely administration of justice. The commission’s performance figures cover its reported activities over 34 months and do not, on their own, establish the overall level of corruption in the country.

 NaijaParrot will continue to follow developments in Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign and the work of law-enfor institutions. NaijaParrot — Hear It First, Hear It True!
