SOWORE HOSPITALISED AFTER ALLEGED THUG ATTACK IN EKITI AS POLICE CONFIRM RESCUE; REPORTS OF MACHETE INJURIES EMERGE

Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has reportedly received medical attention following an attack by suspected hoodlums at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 30, reportedly involved Sowore and members of his campaign team, triggering concern among party supporters and raising fresh questions about the safety of political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections.

initially announced the incident through his social media account, stating that he and his associates had been attacked inside a restaurant in the Ekiti State capital. The development later generated claims that the activist had been abducted, with his campaign organisation initially reporting that his whereabouts were unknown.

The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed that an altercation occurred involving Sowore and some individuals at an eatery in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti. In a statement issued through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the command explained that officers were immediately deployed following a distress report and successfully rescued the AAC presidential candidate.

The police clarified that Sowore was not kidnapped, contrary to reports circulating on social media. According to the command, preliminary findings indicated that he sustained minor injuries during the confrontation and was receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti. The Commissioner of Police, CP Michael Falade, has reportedly directed a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law.

Additional reports circulating after the incident alleged that Sowore’s brother and some members of his campaign team were attacked with machetes during the confrontation. However, the specific claims concerning machete injuries, including the identities and medical conditions of those allegedly affected, have not been independently established. The police statement available at the time of this report confirmed Sowore’s injuries but did not provide details supporting those additional allegations.

Further clarification from the AAC campaign organisation and relevant authorities would be necessary to establish the full extent of injuries sustained by other persons.

Before the police clarification emerged, the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign had raised an alarm over the incident and called on security agencies to intervene urgently. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Abdulkareem Musa, the campaign demanded an immediate security assessment, appropriate protective measures and a comprehensive investigation.

The organisation also stressed that political activities should not become an excuse for intimidation or violence against citizens exercising their democratic rights.

The incident has renewed discussions about political safety, freedom of movement and the responsibility of security agencies to protect individuals regardless of their political affiliations. With the police confirming Sowore’s rescue and subsequent medical attention, the focus has now shifted to identifying those involved and determining what led to the confrontation.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to provide further clarity on the incident and establish whether criminal offences were committed.
