SOUTH-EAST GOVERNORS MAKE FRESH APPEAL FOR TINUBU, URGE IGBO VOTERS TO BACK HIS SECOND TERM

Governors from four South-East states have renewed their appeal to the Igbo electorate to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, urging voters not to be distracted by competing political messages ahead of the presidential election.
The appeal was made on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women Mega Rally and Empowerment Programme for the South-East, held at Okpara Square in Enugu. The governors involved were Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo; Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru; Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah; and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma. Soludo was represented at the event by his deputy, Dr Gilbert Ibezim.
Speaking at the gathering, Governor Peter Mbah called on residents of the South-East to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition, arguing that another term would give the President an opportunity to consolidate the gains of his administration’s economic reforms.
He linked some ongoing development initiatives, including the construction of primary healthcare centres, to the Federal Government’s economic policies. Mbah also encouraged women in the region to participate actively in the electoral process and support Tinubu and APC candidates in the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Using a sailing analogy, the governor said a good sailor should not abandon a journey midway because of challenges, insisting that the political process should be allowed to continue.
Governor Hope Uzodimma described the rally as historic and praised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for the empowerment initiatives targeting women across the South-East. He maintained that the region should continue supporting the President, pointing to what he described as improvements in infrastructure, electricity, healthcare and education. Uzodimma also argued that the Federal Government’s economic reforms had increased the resources available to state governments for development projects.
He cited road projects linking communities and cities across the region, as well as his administration’s ability to meet salary and pension obligations, as examples of the benefits he associated with the current economic direction.
Governor Francis Nwifuru commended the APC-led administration’s skills acquisition and empowerment programmes, urging women in the South-East to support the party at the polls. He described the APC as a party with a clear manifesto and reaffirmed his loyalty to the ruling party, dismissing suggestions that he was involved in any political coalition.
Representing Governor Soludo, Deputy Governor Gilbert Ibezim said the South-East should support Tinubu in recognition of the administration’s achievements, adding that continued cooperation with the Federal Government could bring further benefits to the region.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, also appealed to the Igbo people to embrace political inclusion and strengthen their alliances with other parts of the country.
He referenced the establishment of the South East Development Commission as an important step towards addressing the region’s development concerns. Kalu further argued that stronger political relationships could help advance the South-East’s long-term aspiration of producing a Nigerian president.
The renewed appeal comes amid growing political conversations across the South-East over the 2027 presidential election and the region’s future political direction. However, the four governors’ position at the Enugu rally should not automatically be interpreted as a unanimous endorsement by all five South-East governors.
Abia State Governor Alex Otti had previously rejected claims that the entire regional governors’ forum had collectively committed to Tinubu’s re-election, stressing that no individual could determine the political choices of the whole region. Ultimately, the decision rests with eligible Nigerian voters, including the people of the South-East, when they cast their ballots.
