SHETTIMA ASSURES NORTH AHEAD OF 2027, SAYS REGION HAS NOTHING TO FEAR FROM TINUBU’S SECOND TERM

 ABUJA, NIGERIA —

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged northern Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, assuring the region that it has nothing to fear from another four years of the current administration. Shettima made the appeal on Monday, October 12, when he received a delegation of Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A), a northern political movement established to mobilise support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Vice-President called on northern political leaders and citizens to unite behind the administration, arguing that the region had benefited from government appointments, agricultural programmes and infrastructure projects. He urged stakeholders to work together towards what he described as the development of the North and the improvement of the welfare of its people. Shettima said the administration had more to offer the region if Tinubu secured a second term in office. “I can assure you that the president loves the North and the president will work for the North,” he said.

To support his argument, Shettima cited figures relating to agricultural financing under the current administration. According to the Vice-President, the Bank of Agriculture had disbursed ₦450 billion to 700,000 smallholder farmers nationwide, with approximately 70 per cent of the beneficiaries coming from northern Nigeria. He presented the programme as an example of how the region had benefited from the Federal Government’s policies. The figures were cited by Shettima during the meeting; they were not independently verified in the statements available for this report.

Speaking on behalf of the group, former Kano State Governor and former Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, said the organisation was committed to mobilising support for Tinubu across northern Nigeria. Shekarau explained that the movement was established to coordinate political engagement and counter claims that the Tinubu administration had neglected the region. He said members had been consulting northern governors and other stakeholders to strengthen cooperation ahead of the 2027 election. Former Jigawa State Governor Abubakar Badaru, the group’s Director-General, also pledged to intensify mobilisation efforts at the grassroots level, including across local government areas and wards. The organisation said it planned to engage religious leaders, community figures and other influential Nigerians as part of its campaign activities.

The delegation included several former governors and prominent political figures from northern Nigeria. Among those reported to have attended were former Plateau State governors Joshua Dariye and Simon Lalong, former Taraba State Governor Jolly Nyame, former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, former Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema and former Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda. Also present was National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Chairman Buba Marwa, alongside other government officials and members of the movement’s leadership. Shekarau also invited Shettima to commission the group’s planned office complex as part of efforts to strengthen its organisational structure.

Shettima’s appeal comes as political groups and party stakeholders begin intensifying activities ahead of the 2027 general election. While the Vice-President and the A4A delegation expressed confidence in the administration’s record and future plans, the government’s performance remains a subject of public debate, particularly regarding the cost of living, employment, security and access to essential services. The ultimate impact of government policies on northern communities will depend on how effectively programmes are implemented and whether their benefits translate into improved living conditions for residents.
