LAGOS, NIGERIA
— Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has acknowledged the hardship Nigerians are experiencing amid the Federal Government’s economic reforms, while urging citizens to trust the process and support efforts aimed at building a better future. He made the remarks on Monday at the inaugural Seyi Tinubu Colloquium, held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, where discussions centred on nation-building, youth participation in governance and Nigeria’s future.Speaking at the event themed “Shaping the Future Together,” Seyi recognised that the government’s economic decisions have placed pressure on households, with many families struggling to manage their budgets. He specifically mentioned the removal of the petrol subsidy, foreign exchange reforms and changes to the tax system as major decisions shaping Nigeria’s economic direction. Acknowledging the difficulties associated with the policies, he said: “Changes have not been easy. Families whose budgets have been stretched, the pain was immediate, the lasting improvement more difficult to feel and touch, yet they are no less real.”
Despite acknowledging the difficulties, Seyi urged Nigerians to trust the reform agenda, arguing that the policies were intended to address longstanding economic challenges and create opportunities for future generations. He said the administration had chosen to confront the country’s problems rather than leave them unresolved for younger Nigerians to inherit. According to him, investments in infrastructure, electricity, agriculture, mining and manufacturing could improve productivity, create jobs and strengthen the economy over time.
Seyi also called on young Nigerians to become more involved in shaping government policies and decisions. He argued that the country’s future would depend partly on whether younger generations prepared themselves for leadership and contributed practical ideas to national development. He maintained that today’s decisions would influence the opportunities available to young Nigerians and their children in the years ahead.
The remarks come amid continuing concerns about the cost of living, following major economic policy changes introduced by President Tinubu’s administration since taking office in May 2023. The removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange system have been presented by the government as measures to improve economic stability. However, the policies have also contributed to financial pressure on households, with many Nigerians continuing to struggle with essential expenses. President Tinubu acknowledged similar concerns in his October 1 Independence Day address, saying millions of Nigerians still faced difficulties paying for food, school fees, medical bills and transportation. He promised that his administration would work towards reducing living costs and tackling poverty.
NAijaPARROT REPORTS
Seyi Tinubu’s comments reflect the administration’s argument that economic reforms may deliver longer-term benefits despite the immediate difficulties experienced by many households. However, the central concern for many Nigerians remains when those benefits will translate into more affordable food, transportation, housing and other necessities. As the debate continues, the government’s ability to ease financial pressure on households will remain an important measure of how Nigerians experience the promised benefits of its economic policies.
