RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT FINDS NEW BATTLEGROUND IN AFRICA’S SAHEL
By NaijaParrot October 9, 2026 BAMAKO, MALI — The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is increasingly extending beyond European battlefields, with growing allegations of Ukrainian involvement in the security crisis affecting Mali and other countries in Africa’s Sahel region. Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have accused Ukraine of supporting armed groups fighting their military governments and Russian security partners. The allegations have deepened diplomatic tensions, with the three military-led governments severing diplomatic relations with Kyiv. However, the extent of Ukraine’s involvement remains disputed.
Ukraine Accused of Supporting Armed Groups The controversy centres on the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a predominantly Tuareg separatist group fighting Mali’s military government. Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop accused Ukraine of supporting groups seeking to undermine the country’s territorial integrity during remarks at the United Nations in September. Niger’s Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, also accused Ukraine and France of backing forces allegedly targeting military positions and oil infrastructure. Ukraine has not publicly provided a detailed response to the latest allegations in the reports reviewed. The accusations should therefore be treated as claims made by the governments concerned, rather than independently established facts. Reports Point to Drone Training and Technical Support Questions about Ukraine’s activities in the Sahel intensified after reports emerged suggesting that Ukrainian military intelligence personnel had provided training and technical assistance to Tuareg separatists. A report cited by AFP said a source within the FLA acknowledged contact with Ukrainians and described training involving first-person-view drones. However, the source denied that Kyiv had provided logistical, material or intelligence support for the group’s recent military operations. Other sources cited in regional reporting alleged that Ukrainian personnel had maintained a presence in northern Mali and that drones used by separatists had originated from Ukraine. These accounts differ over the nature and scale of the alleged assistance. They do not, by themselves, establish the extent to which Ukraine has supported specific attacks. Russia’s Growing Military Role in the Sahel Russia has expanded its security partnerships with governments across the Sahel as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have reduced their cooperation with Western partners, particularly France. In Mali, Russian personnel associated with the Africa Corps have worked alongside government forces following the withdrawal of French troops and the departure of the Wagner Group from its former role. The partnership has become a central part of Mali’s security strategy, although armed groups continue to carry out attacks against government forces and Russian-linked personnel. Analysts have questioned whether Russia’s military support can deliver lasting security in a region where armed violence is driven by several factors, including weak state control in remote areas, political instability and competition between armed groups. Different Armed Groups, a Common Enemy The conflict in northern Mali involves groups with different objectives. The FLA seeks greater autonomy or independence for northern Mali, while Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked organisation, pursues a different ideological and political agenda. Despite their differences, reporting indicates that the groups have cooperated in some operations against Mali’s armed forces and their Russian partners. Such cooperation can increase pressure on government forces by allowing groups to coordinate activities against a common adversary. However, it does not necessarily mean that the groups share the same long-term goals. Diplomatic Tensions Could Spread Beyond Mali The allegations have added another dimension to the wider geopolitical competition involving Russia and Ukraine. Kyiv has sought to strengthen its diplomatic relationships across Africa, while Moscow continues to expand its military and security partnerships in countries where Western influence has declined. The Sahel has consequently become an important arena for competing diplomatic and security interests. The region’s military governments have presented cooperation with Russia as an alternative to previous Western-led security arrangements, while Ukraine is seeking a stronger presence on the continent. A report published by the Swedish Defence Research Agency on October 8 noted that Russia’s military engagement in Africa has expanded and evolved during the war in Ukraine, with the continent playing a growing role in Moscow’s wider foreign policy ambitions. What It Means for African Security The growing tensions raise concerns about the possibility that international rivalries could further complicate efforts to address insecurity in the Sahel. Countries in the region are already dealing with attacks by armed groups, displacement, disrupted trade and pressure on communities living far from government-controlled centres. If foreign powers become more deeply involved in supporting opposing sides, local conflicts could acquire an even stronger international dimension. However, the available evidence does not establish that the Russia-Ukraine war has become a direct military confrontation between the two countries on African soil. For Sahelian governments, the immediate challenge remains protecting civilians, securing transport routes and restoring stability while navigating increasingly complicated international relationships.
