ROCHAS OKOROCHA DENIES ARREST AS POLICE MAINTAIN HE WAS DETAINED OVER ALLEGED FORGERY

 ABUJA, NIGERIA —

Former Imo State Governor and ex-senator Rochas Okorocha has denied reports that he was arrested by the Nigeria Police Force, describing the claims as false, while the police insist that he was taken into custody for questioning over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation. The conflicting accounts have sparked fresh controversy surrounding an investigation linked to a disputed All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary result for Imo West Senatorial District.

Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, rejected reports that the former governor had been arrested and subsequently released on bail. According to reports, his camp insisted that no arrest or bail had taken place and challenged those making the claims to provide evidence. The former governor had earlier disputed reports that a court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, questioning the circumstances and dates associated with the alleged order.

However, the police maintain that Okorocha was arrested on Monday night, October 12, at the Reiz Continental Hotel in Abuja. Police spokesperson Aniete Iniedu reportedly told Channels Television that Okorocha was questioned for about an hour before being released on bail. The police also said he was asked to return to Force Headquarters for further questioning as investigations continued. According to the police account, the case involves allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation. These remain allegations and do not amount to proof of guilt.

The investigation is linked to a document circulated online that purportedly showed Okorocha as the winner of the APC senatorial primary for Imo West. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reportedly raised concerns about the document, saying it differed from the official result identifying Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as the winner of the primary. The controversy prompted calls for security agencies to investigate the document and establish how it was produced and circulated. Okorocha’s camp has challenged the claims surrounding the alleged court order and denied wrongdoing. The police, meanwhile, say their investigation is ongoing.

The disagreement over whether Okorocha was arrested highlights the sharply conflicting accounts from the former governor’s camp and the police. While the police have publicly maintained that he was taken into custody and released on bail, Okorocha’s representatives have rejected that account. The allegations surrounding the disputed primary result remain subject to investigation, and any question of criminal responsibility must be determined through due process. NaijaParrot will continue to monitor the matter and report verified developments as they emerge.
