PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE — The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) in Rivers State has expelled a final-year student, Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora, over a viral social media interview in which she allegedly made damaging claims about her final-year research project and her supervisor. The university said the decision was taken by its Senate after the student’s interview with a content creator circulated widely online, attracting attention to her claims about how her academic project was handled.
According to reports, Nora, a student in the Department of English and Literary Studies, appeared in an interview that went viral on social media. During the interview, she allegedly claimed that her project topic was Citizenship and that her supervisor had written the project for her in exchange for ₦150,000. However, the university disputed her account, saying there was no project topic titled Citizenship in the department. In a statement issued through its Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, the institution said the student reportedly admitted that her claims were untrue and had been made to generate social media content.
The university described the content as damaging to its reputation and said it would not tolerate such conduct. According to the institution, its Senate approved the expulsion to serve as a deterrent to other students who might publish similar content. The reports also indicated that the expulsion came after Nora had completed her final examinations, making the decision particularly significant for a student nearing the end of her university education.
The university maintained that the student’s public statements misrepresented its academic processes and created a misleading impression about project supervision in the department. The controversy has raised questions about the responsibilities of students when sharing claims about their institutions online, as well as the consequences of publishing information that an institution considers false or damaging. At the same time, disciplinary decisions involving students can prompt broader discussions about proportionality, due process and the potential long-term effects of expulsion on a student’s academic future.
As of October 12, 2026, the latest report published by Punch Newspapers confirmed that the university had announced Nora’s expulsion. The reports reviewed did not establish whether she had appealed the decision or whether the university had agreed to reconsider the sanction. No reversal of the expulsion was confirmed in the available reports.
