PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE — The Rivers State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and another officer overseeing a police outpost following allegations that suspected cultists renovated the facility and celebrated the completion of the project alongside police personnel. The decision followed the circulation of a viral video showing individuals suspected of belonging to a cult group at the Abuloma Police Outpost on Thursday, October 15, 2026. In a statement issued on Friday, the command confirmed that both officers had been queried and relieved of their duties pending an investigation into the incident.
The video circulating on social media showed several individuals gathered in front of the renovated police facility, with some police officers also appearing in footage of the event. The gathering reportedly took place to celebrate the completion of the renovation. The development generated concerns about how the project was funded, whether the renovation received the necessary authorisation and whether police personnel followed the appropriate procedures in dealing with the individuals involved. However, the allegations concerning the group’s identity and activities remain subject to verification.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, ordered a full investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the renovation. According to the command’s spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, investigators will identify the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the project and determine which police officers authorised or approved the work. The investigation will also examine whether the necessary procedures were followed and whether any personnel breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force. The command warned that police facilities must not be used by suspected criminal groups to gain public recognition, legitimacy or influence.
The command clarified that community contributions towards improving police facilities are permitted under Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund. However, it stressed that such assistance must comply with the law and must not compromise police independence, security or professional standards. The police also emphasised that donations or renovation projects cannot shield any individual or group from investigation or prosecution.
The command said appropriate disciplinary and legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable after the investigation. It reiterated its commitment to fighting cultism and organised crime while maintaining professionalism, transparency and public confidence in the police. The removal of the two officers is an administrative measure pending the outcome of the investigation and does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing on their part.
