REPS GIVE INEC CHAIRMAN SEVEN LEGISLATIVE DAYS TO EXPLAIN PREPARATIONS FOR 2027 ELECTIONS

The House of Representatives has directed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to appear before it within seven legislative days to explain the commission’s level of preparedness for the 2027 general elections.

The directive places the electoral umpire under scrutiny as preparations for the next general elections continue, with questions expected to focus on the commission’s readiness to conduct credible, transparent and peaceful polls across the country.

The House’s action underscores the importance of early planning and effective coordination by INEC to ensure that the electoral process meets the expectations of Nigerians and complies with the country’s electoral laws. As the body constitutionally responsible for organising federal and state elections, INEC is expected to make adequate arrangements for voter registration, election logistics, deployment of personnel, distribution of sensitive materials and the effective use of technology in the electoral process.

The commission’s preparedness is particularly significant given the logistical and administrative challenges associated with conducting elections across Nigeria’s diverse geographical and political landscape.

The seven legislative days granted by the House are expected to provide a timeframe for the INEC chairman to address lawmakers’ concerns and provide information about the commission’s plans for the forthcoming elections.

However, the specific questions raised by the lawmakers, the circumstances surrounding the summons and INEC’s response were not included in the information available for this report. The development comes as attention increasingly turns to the 2027 general elections, which will determine the next set of elected leaders at the federal and state levels.

Nigerians will be watching closely to see how INEC addresses concerns about electoral credibility, operational preparedness and public confidence in the voting process.
