Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he is careful about displaying his wealth and achievements publicly, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured to match his success. The singer made the remarks during an interview with Jam FM, where he discussed the influence he has on young fans and others who see his career as a model for their own ambitions. Rema said he understands that many young people admire him and hope to attain a similar level of success. However, he does not want his lifestyle to make anyone feel inadequate or rush their personal journey.
The singer explained that seeing someone of a similar age achieve significant success can make others feel they are falling behind. He said he tries to avoid making people feel bad about themselves by excessively showcasing his wealth and accomplishments online. According to Rema, he remains concerned about young people who may already be struggling with pressure from social expectations and comparisons with others. He also noted that people sometimes advise him not to worry about how his lifestyle might affect others, but he believes some young people could interpret public displays of wealth in ways that increase their anxiety.
Beyond social media, the singer highlighted the pressure some young people face from their parents, particularly over education and career choices. Rema observed that some parents compare their children with others and push them towards courses or professions they may not genuinely want to pursue, largely because of expectations about securing well-paying jobs. He said he does not want his achievements to add to those pressures or make young people feel they must succeed within a particular timeframe.
Rema also discussed his fashion choices, explaining that he enjoys streetwear and does not regularly rely on expensive designer labels. He acknowledged that jewellery, including his chains and watches, are among the more luxurious aspects of his personal style. His comments highlight his awareness of the influence celebrities can have on younger audiences, especially in an era when social media frequently showcases luxury lifestyles and material success.
The singer encouraged young people not to rush their progress or measure their lives against the achievements of others, stressing that everyone has their own time and path.
