PETER OBI VOWS TO SUPPORT MOTHER OF SLAIN SUPPORTER, SAYS ‘YOU HAVE ANOTHER SON IN ME’

AFA, UDI LGA, ENUGU STATE — Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has pledged continued support to the mother of Ifeanyi Nwolie, his supporter who was shot dead during a political activity in Enugu State. Obi made the promise on Thursday while attending Nwolie’s burial in his hometown of Afa, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. Speaking to the bereaved mother, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) assured her that she would not be left without support following the death of her son. “My humble pledge to the mother is that God Almighty, whom it pleased to bring Ifeanyi home, has also given her another son in me to support her, as Ifeanyi used to,” Obi said. According to reports from the burial, Obi also pledged to continue the financial assistance Nwolie had regularly provided for his mother.

Reports from the event said Obi provided the family with financial support covering 15 months, through December 2027. The gesture was intended to help sustain the mother’s financial support following the loss of her son, who had reportedly assisted her regularly. Obi’s promise came as the family mourned Nwolie, whose death has drawn attention to the dangers associated with political violence in Nigeria. The former governor’s visit and pledge underscored his stated commitment to supporting the family beyond the burial ceremony.

Nwolie was reportedly shot during a political activity organised by the NDC on October 10, 2026, in Enugu State. The event was marred by violence, and Nwolie’s death has renewed concerns about the safety of political supporters as parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 general election. Obi described the incident as a painful reminder of the human cost of political violence and called on political actors to ensure that citizens can participate in democratic activities without fear. He travelled from the United Kingdom to attend the burial, arriving in Abuja early Thursday before connecting to a flight to Enugu, according to his account of the journey.

In his message following the burial, Obi appealed to candidates contesting elections at the federal, state and local government levels to reject violence, ethnic division and religious intolerance. He urged political parties to focus their campaigns on policies and proposals capable of improving the lives of Nigerians.

According to him, democracy can only thrive when citizens are free to express their political preferences and participate in elections without intimidation.

“The process through which we attain public office is more important than the office itself,” he said. Obi also stressed the importance of respecting the rule of law, warning that its erosion could create conditions for disorder and instability. He called for collective efforts to build a country where human life is valued above political ambition and citizens can exercise their democratic rights safely.

The incident has added to concerns about political security ahead of the 2027 elections, with renewed calls for political parties and security agencies to prevent violence during campaigns and other political gatherings.
