OSUN LG CRISIS: ADELEKE, TINUBU’S PRESIDENCY PURSUE NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS
By NaijaParrot October 17, 2026
OSOGBO, OSUN STATE — The Osun State Government and the Presidency are reportedly working towards a negotiated settlement of the lingering local government crisis in the state, with hopes of resolving the dispute before the 2027 general elections. The development was disclosed by the spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, during an appearance on Frank Talk, a programme on Rave 91.7 FM. According to reports published on Saturday, October 17, Rasheed said discussions were ongoing between the governor and the Presidency, with plans to establish a negotiating team to address the prolonged disagreement over the administration and control of local government councils across Osun State.
Rasheed reportedly explained that a negotiating team was being put together to explore a lasting solution to the crisis. However, he clarified that he was not a member of the proposed committee and could not provide specific details about the framework or arrangements being considered. The discussions are expected to focus on finding common ground between the relevant stakeholders and resolving the dispute that has continued to affect local government administration in the state. As of the time of filing this report, no detailed agreement or formal settlement framework had been publicly confirmed in the reports reviewed.
The dispute over Osun’s local government councils has involved rival political factions claiming authority over council secretariats and elected officials. The disagreement intensified following the February 2025 local government elections, which produced chairmen aligned with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while APC-aligned chairmen elected in an earlier election continued to contest control of the councils. The dispute has triggered legal battles, confrontations over access to council secretariats and disagreements about the administration of local government funds. In June 2026, Adeleke publicly called for the withdrawal of police protection from the APC-aligned chairmen, citing a Federal High Court ruling concerning their tenure. The APC side, however, challenged aspects of the legal position, keeping the dispute alive. (Osun State Official Website). The crisis has also affected local government finances, with disagreements over access to statutory allocations adding to the wider administrative challenges facing the councils.
A negotiated resolution could help clarify the authority of local government officials, reduce political tensions and improve the administration of grassroots institutions. Local governments are responsible for important community-level services, making stable administration and transparent management of public funds significant issues for residents, workers and other stakeholders. Nevertheless, the success of any proposed settlement will depend on the terms agreed upon, the participation of the relevant parties and compliance with applicable laws and court decisions.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, efforts to resolve the crisis could become an important issue in Osun’s political landscape. However, the reported negotiations should not be mistaken for a completed settlement. The precise terms, the membership of the proposed negotiating team and the timeline for implementing any agreement remain unclear. NaijaParrot will continue to follow developments and report further details as official information becomes available.
