OSUN COURT HALTS APPOINTMENT OF NEW OLOJO OF OJO, RESTRAINS ADELEKE AND OTHER AUTHORITIES

An Osun State High Court sitting in Ede has issued an interim injunction restraining Governor Ademola Adeleke and other relevant authorities from appointing, installing or recognising a new traditional ruler for Ojo community in Egbedore Local Government Area. The order, granted on October 29, 2026, by Justice K. Akano, concerns the vacant stool of the Olojo of Ojo and will remain in force pending the hearing and determination of a motion before the court.
The development followed a legal action instituted by five princes representing themselves and other members of a ruling house in the community. The applicants are Princes Babatunde Hammed Adegoke, Taofeek Adekunle Adegoke, Nathaniel Olaniyi Adelakun, Abiodun Adelakun and Olukunle Oyetunji. The suit, marked HED/18/2026, was filed through their counsel, A. Mikaheel.
Those listed as respondents in the case include Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State Attorney-General, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Egbedore Traditional Council. Also joined in the suit are Prince Mike Abiola, representing members of the Onimolodun Ruling House, and High Chief Falowo Jamiu Adebayo, representing the kingmakers and warrant chiefs involved in the selection process.
The applicants approached the court seeking an order to prevent the respondents, their representatives and anyone acting through them from appointing, installing, declaring or recognising any candidate as the next Olojo of Ojo while their application remained pending.
In granting the application, Justice Akano restrained the defendants and anyone acting on their behalf from taking steps towards installing or recognising a candidate for the traditional stool. The order specifically covers the appointment, installation, declaration, recognition or acceptance of anyone as the Olojo of Ojo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
The court order was issued under the court’s seal on October 29, 2026. The injunction temporarily places the appointment process on hold while the court considers the pending application.
The latest development brings the ongoing disagreement over the traditional succession process in Ojo community before the court. The competing interests surrounding the vacant stool have raised questions about the appropriate process for selecting the next traditional ruler and the roles of the relevant ruling houses and kingmakers.
However, the interim injunction should not be mistaken for a final judgment on the substantive succession dispute or a declaration of which ruling house is legally entitled to produce the next monarch. The parties are expected to await further proceedings and comply with the court’s directive while the matter remains before it.
The case represents another legal challenge involving traditional institutions and chieftaincy appointments in Osun State, as the courts continue to handle disputes surrounding vacant royal stools and succession arrangements.
