OSUN APC THREATENS TO BOYCOTT TINUBU CAMPAIGN COUNCIL INAUGURATION OVER SHORT NOTICE
By NaijaParrot October 22, 2026
OSOGBO, OSUN STATE — The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the short notice given for the inauguration of the state presidential campaign council for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, warning that the arrangement could create avoidable tension within the party. The party said it was not adequately informed before the announcement of the council’s inauguration, which was scheduled for Thursday, October 22, 2026, under the coordination of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. In a statement attributed to the Osun APC chairman, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, the party said its leaders only became aware of the council’s composition after the list was circulated on social media.
Lawal reportedly argued that an important political exercise involving the re-election campaign of the president should be organised with adequate consultation and proper communication with party leaders. According to the statement, the announcement came less than 24 hours before the planned event, leaving little time for members and stakeholders who might need to travel or make other arrangements to attend. The chairman also questioned why the state party leadership had not been consulted before the list was made public. The APC maintained that its objection was not opposition to Tinubu’s re-election campaign but a concern about the process used to organise the state-level exercise.
The disagreement follows the appointment of Governor Adeleke, a member of the Accord Party, as the Osun coordinator of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign. The decision attracted attention because the APC is the president’s political party, while Adeleke belongs to an opposition party in Osun State. The campaign council list also included prominent APC figures, including former governor Adebisi Akande and former deputy governor Iyiola Omisore, among others. The appointment has raised questions about how the different political camps will work together to coordinate the president’s campaign in the state.
Despite its concerns, the Osun APC said it remained committed to supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid. Lawal reportedly stressed that the party considered the president’s campaign a collective responsibility and wanted the process handled in a way that would promote unity rather than create divisions among supporters. The party also suggested that the absence of prior consultation could generate unnecessary misunderstanding between its state leadership and Adeleke, who has been appointed to coordinate the campaign. The dispute therefore centres on the organisation and communication surrounding the campaign council rather than an outright rejection of Tinubu’s candidacy.
The APC’s position raises questions about participation by its Osun leaders in the scheduled inauguration. The party indicated that the short notice and lack of consultation had made it difficult for some stakeholders to participate, while expressing concern that the arrangement could be misinterpreted as an attempt to create friction within the party. As of the reports available on Thursday, the central issue remained the APC’s objection to the process and timing of the inauguration. Any further decision by the party concerning attendance or participation would depend on subsequent developments.
