Former Imo State Governor and Senator, Rochas Okorocha, has criticised Governor Hope Uzodimma over his political influence in the state, declaring plans to establish a cross-party political alliance known as the Rainbow Coalition to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okorocha made the declaration during a television interview on Thursday, October 29, following a Federal High Court judgment concerning the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Imo West. The former governor expressed support for the coalition initiative associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, saying he would begin efforts to establish the movement in Imo State.
In a direct criticism of the incumbent governor, Okorocha argued that Uzodimma lacked the political structure and grassroots influence required to deliver Imo State for President Tinubu in the 2027 election. He declared that the proposed coalition would bring together politicians from different political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to work towards Tinubu’s re-election.
Okorocha also suggested that some political actors might have to step aside from their individual ambitions to achieve what he described as a common political objective. He maintained that political cooperation should extend beyond party affiliations when leaders share similar goals.
Explaining his support for the initiative, Okorocha commended Wike for promoting a political arrangement that seeks to unite individuals across party lines in support of Tinubu. According to him, the coalition would provide an opportunity for politicians from different platforms to cooperate towards the President’s re-election.
He also indicated his intention to coordinate the initiative in Imo State upon returning from Abuja.
The development comes against the backdrop of an earlier disagreement between Uzodimma and supporters of the Rainbow Coalition. On October 27, Uzodimma publicly declared that there was no Rainbow Coalition in Imo State, insisting that APC members should work within the party’s structure to secure Tinubu’s re-election. The governor also warned campaign coordinators against working outside the APC, threatening to withdraw vehicles provided to those who violated the directive.
latest declaration therefore introduces another dimension to the political disagreement over the structure through which support for Tinubu should be mobilised in Imo State. Meanwhile, the Federal High Court judgment concerning the Imo West senatorial ticket has further intensified the political contest between the former governor and the incumbent governor. The APC’s state leadership has also maintained its position on Uzodimma’s candidacy, indicating that the party’s legal department would examine the court’s decision.
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of 2027, developments surrounding the Rainbow Coalition and the APC’s internal disagreements in Imo State are attracting considerable attention.
