NIGERIAN MAN’S INDECENT EXPOSURE ARREST SPARKS US POLITICAL ROW

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES —
The arrest of a Nigerian man in the United States over a public indecency incident has triggered a political controversy after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) linked him to a Democratic congressional campaign, an allegation the candidate’s campaign has denied. The man, identified as Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe, was arrested by local police in East Pennsboro Township, Pennsylvania, on September 27, 2026, after allegedly exposing himself in public. He was subsequently taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on October 1.
HOW THE INCIDENT HAPPENED
According to a police report cited by the Associated Press, an officer approached Igbojekwe after receiving a report about a suspicious vehicle parked near a neighbourhood park. The officer reported that Igbojekwe was inside a sports utility vehicle with his genitals exposed when they approached him. He was charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. Court records cited by the Associated Press indicate that he later pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge. US
IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES TAKE HIM INTO CUSTODY
Following the criminal case, ICE took Igbojekwe into custody over his immigration status. The Department of Homeland Security said he entered the United States legally in June 2017 but remained after his authorised period of stay expired in November 2019. The department also said he was granted deferred action by the administration of former President Joe Biden in September 2021. Deferred action generally postpones immigration enforcement for a specified period but does not itself grant lawful immigration status. The circumstances of Igbojekwe’s current immigration proceedings have not been fully detailed in the reports available.
DHS LINKS NIGERIAN TO DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN
The controversy intensified after DHS claimed that Igbojekwe had been working as a canvasser for Janelle Stelson, the Democratic nominee challenging Republican Representative Scott Perry in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District. According to the department, Igbojekwe had campaign materials in his vehicle when the incident occurred. ICE Deputy Director Charles Wall criticised Stelson over the alleged connection, using the arrest to question the campaign’s supposed employment of an undocumented immigrant. However, the claim that Igbojekwe worked for Stelson’s campaign has become a central point of dispute.
CAMPAIGN DENIES ANY CONNECTION
Stelson’s campaign rejected the suggestion that Igbojekwe was employed by the campaign, saying its officials had never heard of him before news of his arrest emerged. The campaign also said that anyone who committed a crime and was unlawfully present in the United States should face the appropriate legal consequences. The Associated Press reported that campaign finance records did not show payments to Igbojekwe. However, the absence of campaign payments does not, by itself, establish whether he had any other form of association with the campaign.
DHS FACES QUESTIONS OVER POLITICAL INTERVENTION
The department’s decision to publicly connect the arrest to a Democratic candidate has prompted criticism and calls for scrutiny over whether federal officials used an immigration enforcement announcement to influence a political contest. The Associated Press reported that the government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint alleging a possible violation of the Hatch Act, a US law that restricts certain political activities by federal employees acting in their official capacity. The controversy has raised questions about the boundaries between immigration enforcement, public communication by government agencies and political campaigning, particularly as the United States approaches its November 2026 midterm elections. The complaint represents an allegation requiring review; it does not establish that a violation occurred.
IMMIGRATION CASE AND POLITICAL DISPUTE REMAIN DISTINCT
Igbojekwe’s criminal case and immigration status are separate from the dispute over whether he was connected to Stelson’s campaign. While the DHS has described him as an undocumented immigrant and accused him of working for the campaign, Stelson’s team has denied employing him. The available reports do not establish that the candidate or her campaign was responsible for the alleged offence. Nor has the public controversy over DHS’s announcement determined the outcome of any potential immigration proceedings or watchdog review.
NaijaParrot will continue to monitor developments in the case, including any official findings concerning the alleged campaign connection and the complaint against the US immigration authorities.
