NIGERIA CONDEMNS DEADLY HOUTHI STRIKE ON SAUDI AIRPORT, CALLS FOR RESTRAINT

 ABUJA, NIGERIA —

The Federal Government has condemned the deadly attack attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, describing the incident as a dangerous escalation that threatens civilian lives and regional stability. Nigeria’s position was conveyed in a statement issued on Sunday by Oluwafemi Adeniyi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government said the attack disregarded civilian safety, violated Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and undermined efforts to promote peace and security in the Middle East. The condemnation followed the October 10 attack on the airport, which Saudi authorities said killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300 others. The incident also forced the temporary suspension of airport operations as emergency teams assessed the damage.

In its statement, the Federal Government called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect international law and exercise maximum restraint. Nigeria warned against further actions that could intensify hostilities, endanger civilians, damage civilian infrastructure or undermine regional peace. The government also stressed the importance of respecting Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while underscoring the need to protect civilian lives and critical infrastructure.

The Federal Government expressed solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia and extended condolences to the families of those killed in the attack. It also wished those injured a speedy and full recovery, while commending Saudi authorities for their emergency response and efforts to protect residents and critical facilities. Nigeria further reaffirmed its support for diplomatic initiatives and constructive dialogue aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability in the Middle East.

The airport strike comes amid renewed fighting involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which has received military support from Saudi Arabia. The latest escalation has raised concerns about the safety of civilian aviation and the possibility of further attacks on transport hubs and other critical infrastructure. The Saudi-led coalition has vowed a response to the deadly strike, increasing concerns that the confrontation could intensify further.

Nigeria’s condemnation adds to international concern over the growing violence and its potential consequences for civilian safety and regional security. The Federal Government has urged all sides to avoid further escalation and pursue measures that protect civilians, respect international law and support diplomatic efforts toward peace.
