 PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE —

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), working alongside the Nigeria Customs Service, have arrested a South African national at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, over the alleged importation of 32.74 kilogrammes of cannabis. The suspect, identified as Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, was reportedly found with 30 parcels of a cannabis strain known as Thai Loud, concealed in two travelling bags. The arrest was announced as part of a series of intelligence-led drug enforcement operations across Nigeria.

According to the NDLEA, Jessie travelled from Thailand through Doha, Qatar, aboard a Qatar Airways flight before arriving in Port Harcourt. The agency said the cannabis consignment weighed 32.74 kilogrammes and was discovered during an operation involving its personnel and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service. The NDLEA further alleged that the suspect disclosed she had previously trafficked drugs through other African countries before attempting to extend her activities to Port Harcourt. The allegation forms part of the agency’s account of the investigation.

The arrest was among several operations announced by the agency on October 11, 2026. In a separate operation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted 354,000 tablets of tapentadol weighing 307.20 kilogrammes in a shipment from Pakistan. The agency also reported seizing 75.90 kilogrammes of Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid, from a consignment shipped from the United Kingdom to Lagos. Several suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures, according to the NDLEA.

The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to prevent illicit drugs from entering the country through international airports and cargo channels. The NDLEA has continued to conduct enforcement operations alongside public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing drug trafficking and substance abuse. Further details about the legal proceedings involving the South African suspect had not been provided in the report announcing the arrest.

NaijaParrot will continue to follow verified developments in the case.
