NATIONWIDE STRIKE LOOMS AS NLC, TUC TALKS WITH FG END IN DEADLOCK OVER WORKERS’ DEMANDS

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The possibility of a fresh nationwide strike has increased after negotiations between the Federal Government and organised labour ended in a deadlock, leaving key demands by Nigerian workers unresolved. The meeting, which involved the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and government representatives, was held in Abuja on Thursday as the Federal Government sought to avert a wider industrial dispute. The discussions failed to produce an agreement on the major issues raised by labour unions, including a reduction in petrol prices, the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage and the implementation of outstanding agreements with workers. According to reports by Leadership and the Nigerian Tribune, labour leaders have placed their affiliated unions on alert following the unsuccessful negotiations. Further discussions are expected on Tuesday, October 27.

The negotiations followed a two-week ultimatum issued by the NLC to the Federal Government on October 9. The union demanded urgent measures to reduce the economic pressure on workers, arguing that rising living costs and the depreciation of the naira have significantly weakened the purchasing power of their salaries. Among its major demands is a reduction in petrol prices to the level that prevailed when the current national minimum wage was signed into law in 2024. The NLC has also called for negotiations to begin on a new national minimum wage before the end of October, alongside the implementation of outstanding agreements affecting public-sector and health-sector workers. Other demands include tax relief measures and immediate wage awards to help cushion the impact of rising transportation, food, housing and healthcare costs. The union has warned that failure to address these issues could force it to take further action.

One of the major points of disagreement is when negotiations for a new national minimum wage should begin. The Federal Government has maintained that the current minimum wage of ₦70,000 is due for review in June 2027, based on the three-year review cycle provided by the law. Labour, however, argues that preparations for a new wage agreement should begin immediately because of the rising cost of living and the declining value of workers’ earnings.

The NLC has rejected the government’s position, insisting that workers cannot afford to wait until 2027 before negotiations commence. The disagreement has deepened tensions between both sides, despite the government’s stated commitment to dialogue and efforts to address some of labour’s other concerns.

The latest deadlock has raised concerns about possible industrial action that could affect government offices and other sectors if the dispute escalates. However, the failure of Thursday’s negotiations does not, by itself, mean that a nationwide strike has officially been declared. Labour leaders are expected to consider their next steps as discussions continue, with the October 27 meeting providing another opportunity to resolve the outstanding issues.

The outcome of the next round of talks could prove important in determining whether the dispute moves towards a settlement or further industrial confrontation.

For workers and the wider public, the central issues remain the cost of living, the purchasing power of salaries and the implementation of agreements reached between labour and the government.

The NLC and TUC have continued to press for measures they say would ease the economic hardship facing Nigerian workers.

The Federal Government, meanwhile, faces pressure to find a compromise that addresses labour’s concerns while maintaining its position on the timing of minimum wage negotiations.

With the latest meeting ending without an agreement, attention is now focused on the next round of discussions and any decisions the unions may take afterwards.

Until an official strike notice is issued, workers and members of the public should follow announcements from the NLC, TUC and relevant government authorities for confirmed updates.
