NANS DEMANDS INVESTIGATION INTO DEATH OF EX-AKSU S

 ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA —

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has mourned the death of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), who reportedly died at a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State. The death has raised concerns following allegations that Daniel became seriously ill after receiving medication and reportedly died before he could obtain further medical attention. According to reports citing a statement by NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the student leader complained of a headache while at the camp and was given medication. His condition allegedly worsened after taking the drugs.

The student body expressed shock over Daniel’s reported death and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his final hours. According to the account attributed to NANS, Daniel reportedly requested to be taken to a hospital after his condition deteriorated. However, the approval required for his transfer was allegedly delayed, and he reportedly died before receiving hospital treatment. The statement also claimed that a doctor later identified the medication administered to him as fake. These claims have not been independently established in the reports reviewed. The precise cause of Daniel’s death, the identity and status of the medication, and whether any delay in medical care contributed to his death remain matters requiring clarification.

Daniel’s death has prompted mourning among members of the student community, particularly those associated with Akwa Ibom State University, where he previously served as SUG president. NANS described the loss as painful and extended condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and the university community. The association also stressed the need for the circumstances surrounding his death to be properly examined, including the medication he reportedly received and the response to his request for medical assistance.

The allegations have raised questions about access to prompt medical care at NYSC orientation camps, where thousands of young graduates gather for their compulsory national service programme. A thorough and impartial investigation could establish the sequence of events, identify the medication administered, determine whether the required medical procedures were followed and clarify whether any negligence occurred. The relevant NYSC authorities and camp management should provide an account of the incident, while medical findings should be relied upon to establish the cause of death. Any allegations of misconduct should be assessed through a proper investigation rather than treated as established facts.

As of the time of this report, the publicly available accounts reviewed did not establish the confirmed medical cause of Daniel’s death or provide an independently verified finding that the medication was fake. It also remains unclear whether the NYSC authorities or other relevant agencies have announced the outcome of a formal investigation.

NaijaParrot will continue to follow the matter and report verified developments as more information becomes available. Our condolences go to the family of Etimbuk Daniel, his friends and the Akwa Ibom State University community.
