LULA WINS FOURTH TERM AS BRAZIL’S PRESIDENT, DEFEATS FLÁVIO BOLSONARO

By NaijaParrot | October 26, 2026 Brasília, Brazil

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic fourth presidential term after defeating right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff election, extending his political legacy in Latin America’s largest economy. The official results announced by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed that Lula received 64,256,232 votes, representing 51.79 per cent of valid votes, while Bolsonaro garnered 59,826,041 votes, equivalent to 48.21 per cent. Lula won by a margin of more than 4.4 million votes. (Tribunal Superior Eleitoral)

The victory, recorded on Sunday, October 25, marks another major milestone in Lula’s political career. He previously won the presidency in 2002, 2006 and 2022, making him the first Brazilian president elected to four terms by popular vote since the country returned to democracy.

Lula’s victory followed a fiercely contested campaign shaped by ideological divisions, economic concerns and disagreements over the country’s political direction. In the first round of voting on October 4, Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of the incumbent, raising expectations that the right-wing camp could secure a return to power.

However, Lula regained momentum during the three weeks leading to the runoff, mobilising supporters through public rallies, grassroots engagement and an intensified digital campaign. His support among lower-income voters and communities in Brazil’s Northeast played an important role in his comeback, helping him overcome the initial deficit and secure another term. (AP News)

The election outcome has also triggered political controversy, with Flávio Bolsonaro challenging the circumstances surrounding voting arrangements on election day. A Supreme Court justice authorised an extension of voting hours in response to concerns about transportation difficulties and severe weather in some areas. The decision generated confusion because some polling stations had already closed when the announcement was made. Bolsonaro rejected the outcome and called for the election to be annulled, although Brazil’s electoral authorities declared Lula the winner.

The challenge adds another layer of uncertainty to an already polarised political environment. (AP News)

Lula’s re-election is expected to maintain the broad direction of his administration’s social welfare and environmental policies, while keeping Brazil under left-wing leadership for another term. However, the president faces considerable challenges, including the rising cost of living, concerns about public security, economic pressures and the difficulty of building consensus in a politically divided country.

His government will also need to work with a Congress where conservative forces retain substantial influence. Balancing competing political interests while delivering on campaign promises will be central to his administration’s next phase. Lula’s new term is scheduled to begin on January 5, 2027.

The coming years will test his ability to sustain public support, strengthen democratic institutions and address the concerns of voters who backed his opponent. (Senado Federal)
