LAGOS APC DISMISSES CRITICISM OF TINUBU’S PETROL RELIEF, CHALLENGES OPPOSITION TO OFFER ALTERNATIVES

By NaijaParrot October 9, 2026 LAGOS, NIGERIA

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 30-day petrol relief initiative as disappointing, challenging opposition parties to present practical alternatives capable of easing the financial pressure on Nigerians. The party said opposition leaders should move beyond criticising the Federal Government’s intervention and explain what they would do differently, how their proposals would be funded and how quickly Nigerians could benefit.

The position was contained in a statement by the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, amid growing debate over the government’s response to rising petrol prices and the cost-of-living crisis.

 WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED

The Federal Government announced that Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) retail outlets would forgo their petrol profit margins and sell the product at cost for an initial period of 30 days. The initiative is intended to provide temporary relief, particularly for commercial transport operators, as rising fuel prices continue to affect transportation, food prices and household expenses. Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the arrangement should not be interpreted as a restoration of the former nationwide petrol subsidy, which was removed in May 2023.

LAGOS APC CHALLENGES OPPOSITION PARTIES Oladejo argued that political parties concerned about Nigerians’ economic hardship should provide workable proposals rather than reject government measures without presenting alternatives. He maintained that the welfare of Nigerians should take priority over political disagreements and said the initiative deserved consideration based on its potential benefits. The Lagos APC also argued that criticism of the policy should be based on evidence concerning its financing, implementation and effectiveness. However, the party acknowledged that questions about the intervention’s reach, transparency and measurable impact were legitimate and should be scrutinised.

OPPOSITION RAISES CONCERNS OVER THE RELIEF  The Federal Government’s announcement has attracted criticism from opposition figures who argue that a 30-day intervention may not provide lasting relief from high fuel prices. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, for instance, described the initiative as a temporary measure and questioned its timing ahead of the 2027 general elections. Atiku argued that Nigerians needed a sustainable economic plan rather than short-term relief. His criticism reflects the wider disagreement between the governing party and opposition groups over how best to address petrol prices and the cost of living.

APC ADMITS TEMPORARY DISCOUNT CANNOT SOLVE EVERY ECONOMIC PROBLEM

Despite defending the initiative, the Lagos APC acknowledged that the 30-day discount alone would not resolve Nigeria’s broader economic challenges. The party called for sustained measures to improve domestic refining, stabilise fuel distribution, reduce logistics costs, support public transportation and strengthen Nigerians’ purchasing power. It also urged the Federal Government to communicate the details of the intervention clearly, ensure that intended beneficiaries receive the benefits and explain what measures would follow when the 30-day period ends.

 QUESTIONS REMAIN OVER LONG-TERM RELIEF

The debate has highlighted a central question facing the Federal Government: whether a temporary reduction in petrol costs can provide meaningful relief without a longer-term strategy to address fuel-price volatility and rising living expenses. The impact of the initiative will depend on its implementation, the extent to which savings reach transport operators and consumers, and the government’s plans after the initial period. While the APC has defended the intervention, opposition parties continue to question its timing and long-term value. NaijaParrot.art.blog will continue to monitor developments surrounding the petrol relief initiative and its implications for Nigerians.
