KWANKWASO DEMANDS INDEPENDENT PROBE INTO SUSPECTED AI IMAGES IN INEC VOTER REGISTER

Abuja, Nigeria

Former Kano State Governor and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into suspected artificial intelligence (AI)-generated photographs and other questionable records discovered in the preliminary voters’ register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso raised the concern in a statement published on his official social media page, warning that failure to address the alleged irregularities could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system. The development follows public concerns over photographs suspected to have been generated using artificial intelligence appearing alongside voter information in the preliminary register published on INEC’s website.

questioned how the photographs entered the register and whether the identities associated with the records had undergone proper verification. He welcomed INEC’s decision to investigate the allegations but maintained that Nigerians deserved a transparent process that would establish what went wrong and identify those responsible for any confirmed irregularities.

The former governor also called for an independent audit of the preliminary voters’ register to identify questionable entries, duplicate registrations and potentially artificial identities. According to him, the findings of the investigation should be made public, while anyone found culpable should face appropriate legal consequences.

Kwankwaso further warned against the misuse of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to compromise the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. He stressed that every eligible Nigerian must retain the constitutional right to vote and that efforts to correct irregularities must not unfairly disenfranchise legitimate voters. The former governor maintained that the credibility of the 2027 general elections would depend significantly on the accuracy, transparency and reliability of the voters’ register.

In response to the public concerns, INEC confirmed that it was investigating suspected AI-generated photographs and other questionable records identified in the preliminary register. In a statement issued on October 27, 2026, the commission explained that the register uploaded to its website on October 26 was the same preliminary document physically displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15.

INEC said some questionable registration records had been identified and flagged for further examination during the display exercise, adding that the review and corrective process had commenced. The commission clarified that the online publication did not reflect all ongoing data-cleaning activities and emphasised that the preliminary register was not the final certified version.

INEC stated that it would complete the necessary verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes before the final Register of Voters is certified on December 15, 2026. The commission also assured Nigerians that verified irregularities would be addressed in accordance with established procedures and that further updates would be provided as the investigation progressed.

With preparations for the 2027 general elections underway, the controversy has renewed attention on the importance of accurate voter records, effective identity verification and public scrutiny in protecting electoral integrity.
