JUST IN: CARRICK SAYS MAN CITY’S FINANCIAL CASE HAS RAISED SERIOUS QUESTIONS

By NaijaParrot October 9, 2026

 MANCHESTER, ENGLAND —

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has called for a swift resolution to Manchester City’s long-running financial misconduct case, saying the controversy has raised numerous questions and affected him personally. Carrick made the remarks on Friday while speaking to reporters about the case, which has attracted widespread attention across English football because of its potential implications for the Premier League and the achievements of clubs involved in past title races.

CARRICK CALLS FOR A QUICK RESOLUTION

Carrick said the ongoing proceedings had produced answers to some questions but left others unresolved. He explained that the uncertainty surrounding the case made it difficult to comment extensively while the appeal process remained underway. The Manchester United manager stressed that concluding the matter as soon as possible would benefit everyone involved in the sport. Carrick also acknowledged that the controversy had affected him personally, particularly given his years as a Manchester United player during a period when the club competed directly with Manchester City for major honours.

INDEPENDENT COMMISSION RULED AGAINST MAN CITY

The controversy took a significant turn after an independent Premier League commission announced its findings on September 29, 2026. The commission found Manchester City guilty of charges relating to financial rule breaches covering nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. It also upheld three of four charges concerning the club’s alleged failure to cooperate with the league’s investigation. According to the Premier League, the findings included the use of commercial agreements that misrepresented the actual arrangements, inaccurate financial reporting and breaches of spending regulations. Manchester City has denied wrongdoing and challenged the commission’s findings, maintaining that the decision contains significant errors of law, principle and fact. The club lodged its appeal on October 1, 2026. The appeal is to be considered by an independent three-member board, with proceedings expected to take place privately.

UNITED’S PAST TITLE RACES ADD TO THE DEBATE

Carrick spent 12 years at Manchester United between 2006 and 2018, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League during his playing career. He was part of the United side that narrowly missed out on the 2011/12 Premier League title to Manchester City on goal difference. City secured the championship through Sergio Agüero’s dramatic stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the season. Asked whether Manchester United should receive titles retrospectively if the case ultimately leads to findings that affect previous results, Carrick declined to make a definitive judgment. He emphasised that the experience of winning a trophy in the moment was different from receiving recognition years later.

 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The appeal process will determine whether the commission’s findings are upheld, altered or referred back for further consideration. Possible consequences for Manchester City could include sporting or financial sanctions, depending on the final outcome and any subsequent decisions. However, no specific punishment should be treated as certain while the appeal remains unresolved. The case has also raised broader questions about financial regulation, competitive fairness and accountability in English football. For now, Manchester City continues to compete while the legal process moves forward.

NaijaParrot will continue to monitor the case and report verified developments as they emerge.
