IRAN DETECTS NEW OPENING IN WASHINGTON AS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PUSHES TO RESTART NEGOTIATIONS

Tehran, Iran
Iran has indicated that the United States may be adopting a different approach towards diplomatic negotiations, following a letter from US Vice President JD Vance aimed at reopening communication between Washington and Tehran. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, disclosed on Saturday that he had read the letter but had yet to send a formal response.
Speaking in a televised interview, Rezaei said the tone of the American communication had changed significantly, describing the development as a positive indication for ongoing diplomatic efforts. “I read the letter. I haven’t yet responded. Their tone has completely changed,” he said. Rezaei interpreted the perceived change as a positive sign for Iran, although he did not disclose the letter’s contents or indicate whether Tehran would accept Washington’s proposed approach.
The development comes amid renewed efforts by the administration of US President Donald Trump to revive negotiations with Iran and prevent another escalation of the conflict between the two countries. Reports indicate that Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iranian officials in recent days as part of Washington’s attempt to establish a fresh diplomatic channel.
The correspondence was reportedly delivered through intermediaries, with Qatar playing a role in facilitating communication between the two sides. The proposed engagement is understood to involve discussions around Iran’s nuclear programme and broader security concerns. However, Tehran has not publicly confirmed acceptance of Washington’s proposed terms.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that the leadership had reviewed Vance’s letter during high-level consultations. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Araghchi described Washington’s effort to open a broader dialogue as a positive step but warned that the initiative must not be used to create divisions within Iran.
He maintained that there were currently no plans for direct meetings with American officials, stressing that Tehran’s conditions for negotiations remained clear. Araghchi also disclosed that an Iranian aide had travelled to Qatar to continue consultations with mediators.
Qatar and Pakistan have remained involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and finding a possible path towards negotiations.
Despite the diplomatic signals, Iran has continued to issue warnings against further military action by the United States or Israel. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly instructed the country’s armed forces to maintain readiness and respond immediately to any new threat.
The warning underscores the fragile security situation, even as diplomatic communication continues. Iran has also maintained demands relating to the lifting of restrictions on its economy, the US naval blockade, and an end to hostilities as part of the wider negotiations. Meanwhile, Washington has continued to insist that any diplomatic agreement must address its central security concerns, particularly preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The diplomatic developments are taking place against the backdrop of continuing disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes for global energy supplies. The conflict has heightened concerns over commercial shipping, regional security and the potential consequences of further military escalation.
Any agreement between Washington and Tehran could therefore have implications beyond the two countries, particularly for international oil markets, maritime trade and security across the Middle East.
Although Rezaei’s comments suggest that Tehran has noticed a change in Washington’s diplomatic approach, no agreement has been announced and Iran has not formally responded to Vance’s letter.
For now, both countries appear to be keeping diplomatic channels open while maintaining sharply different positions on key security and political issues. Whether the latest communication will lead to direct negotiations or another breakdown in relations remains uncertain.
