INEC WARNS NIGERIANS AGAINST FAKE GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE LIST CIRCULATING ONLINE

By NaijaParrot October 12, 2026

 ABUJA, NIGERIA —

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed an online publication claiming to contain a special list of governorship candidates for six Nigerian states ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the document as fake. The commission identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano, urging Nigerians to disregard the misleading publication and avoid sharing it. According to a report by The Punch on Monday, October 12, INEC issued a public notice across its official communication platforms to clarify that the purported announcement did not originate from the commission.

In its notice, the electoral body categorically rejected the online document, warning that information suggesting it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states was false. INEC urged the public to verify electoral information through its official notices, press releases and verified communication channels rather than relying on unconfirmed posts circulating on social media. The clarification comes amid heightened public interest in the commission’s preparations for the 2027 elections and recent controversy surrounding the publication of final lists of governorship candidates.

 The states mentioned in the fake publication are:

 * Zamfara

* Gombe

* Delta

* Plateau

* Yobe

* Kano

 INEC cautioned Nigerians against treating the purported list as an official record of candidates cleared to contest in those states. The commission’s warning underscores the importance of confirming election-related information directly from authoritative sources, particularly as political parties and aspirants prepare for the next electoral cycle.

 The warning follows recent reports about prominent aspirants missing from INEC’s final governorship candidate lists, including PDP candidates Isa Ali Pantami in Gombe State and Ladi Adebutu in Ogun State. Those omissions have generated political reactions and questions about party membership registers, nomination procedures and compliance with electoral law. INEC’s separate rejection of the fake publication should not be confused with those reported omissions. The distinction is important because an authentic candidate list must be obtained from the commission’s official publications, not from documents whose origin cannot be verified.

 The electoral commission has encouraged citizens to exercise caution when encountering purported election announcements online. Misinformation about candidates can confuse voters, misrepresent political parties’ positions and undermine public understanding of the electoral process. Nigerians seeking confirmation of candidates or election-related announcements should consult INEC’s official website and verified communication channels. Official source: INEC official website.

 INEC has urged Nigerians to disregard the fake governorship candidate list circulating online and rely on its official communications for accurate election information. As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the commission’s warning highlights the need for voters and political stakeholders to verify claims before sharing them.

  NaijaParrot will continue to monitor official announcements and report verified developments concerning the 2027 elections.
