The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the outcome of its review of complaints arising from the final lists of governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates for the 2027 general elections. In a press statement issued on Thursday, October 29, and signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), the Commission disclosed that it received a combined total of 130 petitions from political parties across several states.
According to the Commission, the complaints involved the omission of some political parties, the inclusion of candidates whose names were allegedly absent from their parties’ membership registers, and cases of alleged multiple nominations.
After examining the complaints, relevant records and applicable legal provisions, INEC said it approved some requests, rejected others and removed certain candidates whose published nominations were found to be inconsistent with electoral requirements.
For the governorship elections, INEC disclosed that it received 69 petitions from 12 political parties across 26 states. Out of this number, 41 petitions were successful, while 28 were rejected after the Commission’s review. The Commission explained that successful complaints resulted in the approval of affected candidates and political parties, subject to the relevant legal provisions.
Regarding the State Houses of Assembly elections, INEC received 61 petitions from 11 political parties across 11 states. The Commission approved 25 petitions and declined 36 others. INEC also confirmed that some candidates previously published in the final lists had been removed after investigations established that their names were not contained in the membership registers submitted by their political parties or that their nominations did not meet the applicable legal requirements.
The electoral body stated that the affected candidates, political parties and states would be reflected in an updated candidate list to be published on its official website.
INEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, fairness and the credibility of the electoral process, assuring political parties, candidates and Nigerians that its decisions were guided by relevant laws and established procedures. The latest review follows the Commission’s earlier press statement of October 13, 2026, concerning complaints relating to the final lists published on October 10.
