MANGU, PLATEAU STATE — Armed men have reportedly abducted a businessman and killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed to contain recurring security threats. The incident reportedly occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, according to a report by Vanguard. The attackers struck during the period when movement was restricted in the affected areas.
A community member, Lawrence Tabitha, told journalists that the abducted businessman deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser. According to his account, the gunmen had taken the businessman before encountering the NSCDC officer, a Deputy Superintendent, who was riding his motorcycle near his residence. Tabitha alleged that the officer was shot after the motorcycle’s headlight exposed the attackers’ movements as they fled with their captive. The businessman’s identity and whereabouts had not been publicly confirmed in the report, while the circumstances surrounding the officer’s killing were yet to be independently established.
The Plateau State Government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Mangu, Barkin Ladi and Bokkos local government areas on September 21, following renewed security threats. The restriction runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with authorities also announcing a ban on motorcycle use in the affected areas as part of efforts to restore order. However, repeated attacks during restricted hours have raised concerns among residents about the effectiveness of the measures and the ability of security agencies to protect vulnerable communities. Earlier reports from Mangu and other affected parts of Plateau State documented additional killings despite the curfew.
Tabitha reportedly appealed to security agencies and the Plateau State Government to strengthen security operations in Pushit District and neighbouring communities, while ensuring the safe release of the abducted businessman. He also raised concerns over repeated attacks in communities including Vodni, Sabon Gari and Nchiya. As of the time of the report, efforts to reach security operatives for confirmation of the latest incident had been unsuccessful. The identities of the attackers and their motive had not been established publicly. The incident adds to mounting security concerns in Plateau State, where residents continue to seek effective protection against armed attacks and abductions.
