GERMANY EXPLAINS HOW TO APPLY FOR LONG-STAY VISAS ONLINE AS NIGERIANS SEEK WORK, STUDY AND FAMILY REUNION OPPORTUNITIES

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The German government has provided an online application process for eligible long-stay visa applicants, allowing Nigerians planning to work, study, undergo vocational training or reunite with family members in Germany to begin their applications through its official Consular Services Portal. According to information published by the German Missions in Nigeria, a national visa is generally required for stays exceeding 90 days. The online process allows applicants to complete application forms and upload supporting documents before attending an in-person appointment at the relevant German mission.
The German Consulate explained that applicants can use the portal to submit their information and documents for an initial completeness check. If documents are missing or require correction, applicants may receive feedback through the system before proceeding to the next stage.
Eligible visa categories available through the online process in Nigeria include the Opportunity Card, EU Blue Card, employment visas, study and language-course visas, vocational training visas and family-reunion visas.
Applicants must confirm that their intended visa category is available through the portal before starting the process. To begin, applicants should visit the official German Consular Services Portal at digital.diplo.de create an account and select the appropriate visa category based on their purpose of travel.
Applicants are expected to complete the online application form accurately and upload the documents required for their specific visa category. These may include a valid passport, proof of qualifications, admission or employment documents, evidence of financial means and other supporting papers, depending on the type of application.
After submitting the application, applicants should monitor their accounts for feedback from the German authorities and respond to any requests for additional or corrected documents. Once directed to proceed, applicants must attend an in-person appointment at the relevant German mission.
During the appointment, officials will verify their identity and original documents, collect biometric information, including fingerprints and a photograph, conduct any necessary interview and receive the applicable visa fee.
Submitting an online application does not mean the visa has been approved. For applicants living in southern Nigeria, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and other states within its jurisdiction, the German Consulate General in Lagos is generally responsible for processing national visa applications.
The German Embassy in Abuja handles applications from certain categories of applicants and residents of designated states, subject to its jurisdictional rules. Applicants should confirm the appropriate mission before proceeding. The German Missions in Nigeria list the standard national visa processing fee as €75, payable in Nigerian naira at the mission’s applicable exchange rate. Applicants should check the latest official instructions for their category before attending their appointments.
The fee is generally non-refundable if an application is refused. Applicants are also advised to provide genuine documents and accurate information. The German Consulate warns that applications involving forged documents or false information may be rejected and could lead to further immigration consequences.
It is important to note that not every long-stay visa category is necessarily available online in every location. Where the online process is unavailable for a particular category, applicants may need to follow the paper application and appointment procedure specified by the responsible German mission. Nigerians interested in relocating to Germany are therefore encouraged to consult the official German visa information pages and carefully review the requirements for their intended purpose of travel before paying anyone for assistance.
The official information and application resources are available through the German Missions in Nigeria visa information page and the Consular Services Portal
