Oct 23, 2026 | Cross Rivers State

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly intercepted a cache of firearms, including three general-purpose machine guns (GPMGs), seven AK-47 rifles and other high-calibre weapons during a security operation in Cross River State. The operation has drawn attention to ongoing security efforts aimed at preventing the circulation of illegal firearms and strengthening public safety across the state. Cross River State Deputy Governor, Peter Odey, commended the DSS and other security agencies following the operation on Friday.

Odey made the commendation while inspecting the recovered weapons at the DSS state headquarters in Calabar, where he acknowledged the importance of intelligence gathering and cooperation among security agencies in tackling security threats. The interception represents a significant recovery of firearms, although further details regarding the operation, the origin of the weapons and any arrests connected to the seizure were not provided in the information available for this report. The recovery also underscores the continuing importance of coordinated security operations and intelligence-led interventions in preventing weapons from falling into the wrong hands. Residents will be looking to the relevant authorities for further information about the operation and any subsequent investigations.
