DAURA THROWS WEIGHT BEHIND MAKINDE’S 2027 PRESIDENTIAL BID, PROMISES FOUR-YEAR NATIONAL RESET

Abuja, Nigeria

Alhaji Lawal Musa Daura, the vice-presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has described Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, as the most competent and credible contender for Nigeria’s presidency ahead of the 2027 general election. Daura made the declaration while receiving leaders of the Northern Patriotic Front (NPF) at the APM Presidential Campaign Headquarters in Abuja, where the group presented an award to Makinde and announced its support for his presidential ambition.

According to Daura, Makinde’s experience in business, record in public office and approach to governance distinguish him from other presidential contenders. He challenged Nigerians who question the governor’s suitability for the presidency to examine his professional background and performance in Oyo State.

The APM vice-presidential candidate said Makinde had established himself as a successful businessman with considerable financial experience before entering politics. He argued that the governor’s record in public service, particularly his approach to transparency and accountability, should form an important part of the assessment of his presidential ambition. Daura maintained that Nigerians should pay closer attention to the achievements and stewardship of political officeholders rather than making decisions based on ethnic, religious or regional considerations.

He also warned that the country could not afford to continue entrusting leadership responsibilities to individuals without critically examining how they had managed public resources and opportunities.

Daura further explained that, if elected, a Makinde-led administration would operate as a four-year transitional government of national unity. He said the proposed administration would concentrate on resetting four major areas of national life: the economy, education, security and Nigeria’s socio-political environment.

According to him, the objective would be to address structural challenges confronting the country and establish a foundation for sustainable governance. The campaign has presented the proposal as a national renewal agenda aimed at strengthening institutions, improving public accountability and promoting inclusive leadership.

Earlier, the President of the Northern Patriotic Front, Alhaji Ali Abacha, pledged the support of northern political stakeholders for the Makinde-Daura presidential ticket. Abacha said the group identified with Makinde’s presidential ambition and his proposed Reset Nigeria agenda, describing the governor’s record in Oyo State as one of the reasons for its decision to support the ticket.

He also commended Makinde for choosing Daura as his running mate, describing the former security chief as someone whose experience could contribute to efforts to address Nigeria’s insecurity challenges. The group pledged to sustain its mobilisation activities ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

The development adds another dimension to the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with parties and political groups seeking support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Makinde’s campaign is also seeking to attract voters beyond his South-West political base, with its appeal to northern stakeholders forming part of that broader engagement.

However, Daura’s description of Makinde as the most competent candidate remains the political position of his running mate and campaign organisation, rather than an independently established assessment of all presidential contenders. As the election approaches, voters will have the opportunity to examine the candidates’ records, policies, manifestos and proposed solutions to Nigeria’s economic, security and social challenges before making their choices.
