CONTROVERSY OVER OBA DAPO TEJUOSO’S CROWN REMOVAL SPARKS DEBATE ABOUT YORUBA TRADITION

ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE — The removal of his crown by the Osile of Oke Ona Egbaland, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, during a church service has sparked public debate, with reactions divided over the relationship between Yoruba traditional customs and the expression of religious devotion. The controversy followed the circulation of a video showing the monarch removing his crown and skullcap while kneeling and praising God during a church gathering. The incident has drawn attention from social media users and commentators, some of whom have questioned whether the action conforms to the expectations associated with traditional kingship.

The discussion centres on the significance of a monarch’s crown and head covering within Yoruba traditional institutions. For many people, the crown is more than an item of clothing; it represents royal authority, cultural identity and the dignity of the throne. Some commentators have criticised the monarch’s action, arguing that traditional rulers are expected to observe established customs when appearing in public. Others have defended him, viewing the gesture as an expression of humility and reverence before God during worship. The differing reactions have raised questions about how traditional rulers can balance their cultural responsibilities with their personal religious convictions.

Oba Adedapo Adewale Tejuoso, also known as Karunwi III, is the Osile of Oke Ona Egba in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He ascended the throne in 1989 and is known for his background in medicine, business and traditional leadership. Over the years, the monarch has spoken publicly about his Christian faith and how it has influenced his life. In an interview published by Punch in 2017, he discussed his journey to the throne and his religious beliefs. His Christian identity has become part of the wider conversation surrounding the incident, with supporters arguing that worship is a personal act of devotion, while critics maintain that the customs attached to a royal office should be respected.

The controversy has also renewed discussions about the expectations placed on traditional rulers as custodians of culture and heritage. However, reactions on social media alone do not establish whether a particular action constitutes a formal breach of customary law or palace protocol. Such a determination would depend on the relevant traditions, rules and views of the recognised traditional authorities concerned. As of the time of writing, no official statement from the palace addressing the controversy has been confirmed in the reports reviewed. The incident highlights the continuing conversation about tradition, faith and the responsibilities associated with traditional leadership in contemporary Nigerian society.
