BREAKING: NIGERIA’S EBOLA INDEX PATIENT REPORTEDLY EVACUATED ABROAD BY AIR AMBULANCE

Abuja, Nigeria
Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola patient has reportedly been evacuated abroad aboard a specialised medical air ambulance for further treatment, according to media reports citing sources familiar with the operation. The reported evacuation took place in the early hours of Monday, October 26, through the private aviation section of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. According to reports by ARISE News and other media organisations, the patient was transferred to the airport in a convoy involving ambulances and diplomatic vehicles. Airport officials reportedly restricted access to the private wing during the operation. The woman has been identified in media reports as Nigeria’s Ebola index patient. However, at the time of publication, an official statement confirming her departure and destination was not available in the reports reviewed.
The reported evacuation comes amid heightened surveillance and contact-tracing efforts by Nigerian health authorities following confirmation of an Ebola case caused by the Bundibugyo virus. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said two suspected cases reported in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State had tested negative. Samples collected from the patient’s husband also reportedly returned negative results.
The agency disclosed that 53 primary contacts had been identified and were being monitored, while efforts to trace additional contacts continued. Health authorities are working with relevant government agencies and public health partners to strengthen surveillance, isolate suspected cases where necessary, and prevent further transmission.
According to the NCDC, the confirmed patient had been receiving medical care in isolation, with infection-prevention and control measures in place. The agency has urged members of the public to cooperate with contact-tracing teams, provide accurate information and follow official health guidance. It has also warned against misinformation and the stigmatisation of individuals identified as contacts.
Being identified as a contact does not mean that a person has contracted Ebola. Such individuals are monitored so health professionals can assess their condition and respond promptly if symptoms develop.
The reported evacuation is part of the developing situation surrounding Nigeria’s Ebola response. Further details, including confirmation of the patient’s departure and destination, are awaited from the relevant authorities.
As the situation develops, Nigerians are advised to follow updates from the NCDC and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare rather than circulate unverified claims. Public health officials continue to emphasise early reporting, cooperation with health teams and strict adherence to infection-prevention guidance as essential measures for containing the disease.
