BANDITS KILL NEWLY RECRUITED SOKOTO WORKERS IN DEADLY AMBUSH, SIX BODIES REPORTEDLY RECOVERED

SOKOTO STATE, NIGERIA — Suspected bandits have reportedly attacked a vehicle conveying passengers returning from Sokoto city, killing several occupants, including newly recruited workers of the Sokoto State Government, according to local media reports. The attack reportedly occurred along a road leading to Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State as the passengers were travelling home after visiting the state capital for further screening and documentation. A report published by The Metro on Thursday, citing security commentator Bakatsine, said the victims were believed to include people among the thousands recently recruited into the state workforce.

According to the report, the passengers had travelled to Sokoto city for further screening and collection of employment documents before the journey back to their communities. The incident was described as an ambush in which armed men intercepted their vehicle and opened fire on the occupants. The headline supplied for this report states that six bodies were recovered after the attack. However, the report reviewed by NaijaParrot did not independently confirm the recovery of six bodies or establish the final death toll. The identities of the victims and the number of people who may have survived the attack also remain unclear from the information available.

The incident comes weeks after the Sokoto State Government announced a verification exercise for 3,100 newly recruited civil servants. In a statement published on September 23, the state government said a committee had been established to verify the workers and confirm their deployment to ministries, departments and agencies before salary payments. The government subsequently announced on October 14 that salary payments to the 3,100 recruits had commenced following the verification process. (Sokoto State Government) The reported attack has therefore raised concerns about the safety of people travelling for government employment-related activities in areas affected by insecurity. However, the available reports do not establish how many of the victims were among the 3,100 recruits.

Sokoto State has experienced repeated attacks by armed groups, with residents in some communities facing killings, kidnappings and threats to their livelihoods. The latest reported incident has renewed concerns about the safety of travellers using roads connecting Sokoto city with rural communities. As of the time of reporting, the available account did not include an official statement from the Sokoto State Police Command confirming the attack, the reported six recovered bodies or the identities of those killed. Further information from the police and state authorities is needed to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

The reported killing of people returning from employment screening highlights the vulnerability of civilians travelling through areas affected by armed violence. Authorities will need to clarify the number of casualties, identify the victims and investigate those responsible for the attack. NaijaParrot will update this report if an official statement or further independently verified information becomes available.
