ILORIN, KWARA STATE —
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has donated football boots to 350 young players participating in the Kwara Kiddies League, in a move aimed at supporting grassroots football development and nurturing emerging talents in Nigeria. The donation was made through the Taiwo Awoniyi Foundation, which has continued to provide support for young footballers in Kwara State. The distribution took place in Ilorin on Saturday, October 10, 2026.The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Bolakale Mogaji, commended Awoniyi for investing in the development of young footballers. Mogaji, who participated in the distribution, said the gesture highlighted the importance of partnerships between successful sports personalities and grassroots football programmes. He also expressed hope that Awoniyi’s example would encourage more athletes and organisations to support youth sports development across the country. FOUNDATION’S SUPPORT GOES BEYOND FOOTBALL BOOTS The Chief Operating Officer of the Kwara Kiddies League, Ibrahim Jatto, expressed appreciation to the foundation on behalf of the league’s more than 500 young participants. According to Jatto, the foundation has supported the league over the years with playing kits, meals and cash rewards for outstanding players. He also noted that the league is working to improve the visibility of its young talents through platforms such as Wyscout and Eyeball, which can help showcase players to a wider football audience.
Awoniyi, who plays for Coventry City and serves as chairman of the Kwara Kiddies League, has been involved in initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for young footballers in his home state. The latest donation provides 350 players with football boots for training and matches, addressing one of the practical needs of children pursuing their football ambitions. While equipment alone cannot guarantee a professional career, continued access to training, organised competitions and talent-development opportunities can help young players improve their skills and gain exposure. The initiative highlights the role individuals and private organisations can play in supporting grassroots sports alongside government and football authorities.
