ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CRISIS DEEPENS AS APOSTLE THREATENS LEGAL ACTION OVER NOVEMBER ELECTION

By NaijaParrot October 23, 2026

ENUGU, NIGERIA — The leadership crisis within the Assemblies of God Church Nigeria has taken another turn after Apostle Iheanyi Patrick Ogele reportedly threatened legal action against the factional leadership headed by Rev. Dr. Abel Amadi over the church’s planned November executive election. According to a report by SaharaReporters published on Friday, October 23, Ogele, through his lawyer, issued a 14-day pre-action notice demanding that the election be suspended until several complaints about the church’s administration and longstanding leadership dispute are addressed.

The legal notice was reportedly dated September 30, 2026, and addressed to the church’s national headquarters in Enugu. Ogele’s counsel, C.C. Erondu of Chuks C. Erondu & Co., reportedly argued that proceeding with the election before resolving the outstanding grievances could worsen divisions within the denomination. The petition alleged that earlier complaints submitted to the church’s leadership had not received the desired response. It also raised concerns about alleged marginalisation of non-Igbo ministers, discrimination against women ministers, retirement policies affecting married ministers, fundraising practices and the unresolved dispute involving Rev. Dr. Paul Emeka. These are allegations contained in the petition and have not been independently established by NaijaParrot.

The Assemblies of God Church Nigeria has faced a prolonged leadership dispute involving the camp led by Rev. Dr. Abel Amadi and the group associated with Rev. Dr. Paul Emeka. The disagreement has persisted despite previous legal proceedings and efforts to restore unity within the denomination. Earlier reporting by The Sun Nigeria documented the continuing divisions and attempts by church leaders to find a resolution.

Amadi was elected General Superintendent in November 2022, according to contemporaneous reporting by Punch Newspapers. The church’s official website currently identifies Rev. Dr. Abel Ukachi Amadi as its General Superintendent.

According to the reported notice, Ogele’s legal team warned that court proceedings could be initiated if the demands were not addressed within 14 days of receipt of the notice. The proposed action seeks to prevent the election from proceeding until the issues raised by the petitioner are considered. The notice reportedly urged the church leadership to pursue a peaceful resolution. However, the report does not establish whether a lawsuit has subsequently been filed or whether a court has issued any order stopping the planned election.

The latest development highlights the continuing challenge of resolving the leadership dispute within one of Nigeria’s prominent Pentecostal denominations. Whether the threatened legal action proceeds, and whether the November election goes ahead as planned, remains uncertain based on the available reporting. A resolution acceptable to the competing sides could be important to efforts to restore unity and confidence among members of the church.
