APC DEFENDS WIKE’S SUPPORT FOR TINUBU, SAYS FCT MINISTER IS NOT A PARTY MEMBER

By NaijaParrot October 13, 2026

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, stressing that the minister is not a member of the ruling party but has the constitutional right to support any political candidate of his choice. APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the situation was not about the President making a decision to bring Wike into the party, but about citizens voluntarily choosing to support Tinubu because they believe in his policies. Morka’s position comes amid growing debate over Wike’s continued membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while openly supporting Tinubu and mobilising support for his expected second-term bid in 2027.

Morka maintained that Wike’s political choices should be understood within the context of his rights as a Nigerian citizen. He explained that supporting a president from another political party does not automatically make someone a member of the ruling party. The APC spokesperson had previously stated that Wike, as a PDP member, was free to campaign for candidates outside his party, adding that questions about his relationship with the PDP should be directed to the opposition party.

The APC spokesman’s comments reflect the party’s defence of cross-party support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Wike has repeatedly maintained that his support for Tinubu does not mean he has defected from the PDP. He has also defended the Rainbow Coalition, which brings together political figures and supporters from different parties to mobilise support for the President. On Tuesday, Wike said the coalition was intended to support Tinubu’s re-election while allowing participants to retain their political identities and pursue other electoral contests under their respective parties.

Wike’s position has generated debate over party loyalty, political alliances and the relationship between presidential and state-level elections. While the minister says his support for Tinubu does not prevent the PDP from fielding candidates in other elections, some APC leaders have expressed concerns about political arrangements that could weaken the ruling party’s candidates at state and legislative levels. As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the debate highlights the distinction between an individual’s political support for a presidential candidate and formal membership of the candidate’s political party.
