Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has called on Nigerians, particularly political leaders, community stakeholders and youths across Northern Nigeria, to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the appeal while receiving an Award of Excellence from the Arewa Revival Project (ARP), a northern organisation that recognised his contributions to legislative development and democratic governance in Nigeria. The award was presented during a ceremony at the Senate President’s office in Abuja.
According to a report by THISDAY, Akpabio described the recognition as an encouragement to continue contributing to national unity, political stability and development. He urged stakeholders in the North to rally behind Tinubu and support his administration’s programmes, arguing that sustained public engagement and cooperation would be important to advancing the government’s development agenda.
Beyond his appeal for political support, the Senate President assured young people in Northern Nigeria of his commitment to initiatives aimed at improving their opportunities in education, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship and economic inclusion. He stressed that young Nigerians should have meaningful opportunities to participate in national development and contribute to building a stronger country.
Akpabio also called for closer cooperation among the Federal Government, state governments, community leaders and youth organisations to expand opportunities for young people, particularly those in the North. He maintained that investment in youth development was important for promoting peace, addressing insecurity and achieving sustainable development.
Speaking during the presentation, the Project Coordinator of the Arewa Revival Project, Hon. Muttaka Ahmed Ibrahim, said the award recognised Akpabio’s contributions to democratic governance and national development. Ibrahim explained that the organisation was committed to recognising public service, promoting national unity and encouraging leadership that supports peace, development and the welfare of Nigerians.
He also called for stronger collaboration among political leaders, community organisations and other stakeholders to address the challenges facing Northern Nigeria, particularly those affecting young people. The organisation expressed hope that the recognition would strengthen cooperation among stakeholders working towards a peaceful, inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
Akpabio’s appeal comes as political discussions and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections continue across the country. His call places the question of political support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition among the issues receiving attention from political stakeholders in Northern Nigeria. The appeal also highlights youth empowerment, economic opportunities, national unity and security as important themes in discussions about the country’s future.
Ultimately, the 2027 election will provide Nigerian voters with the opportunity to assess the candidates and their respective programmes before deciding who should lead the country. Source: THISDAY, October 29, 2026.
