Two separate incidents have drawn public attention in Nigeria: the arrest of a man accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in Abuja, and the death of a university lecturer who was found dead in a hotel room in Edo State. In Abuja, police say the young girl was found to be about three months pregnant following alleged repeated sexual abuse. In Edo State, three people were reportedly arrested after a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, died during a hotel visit. NaijaParrot reports the details of both incidents and the latest publicly reported developments.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a man identified as Zayyanu Halilu over the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl inside a parked vehicle at Airport Bridge Taxi Park in Abuja. According to a police statement reported by Punch Newspapers on October 3, the arrest occurred on Friday, October 2, when operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit were conducting routine patrols in the area.
Police said officers noticed a navy-blue Volkswagen with its windows fully wound up at the taxi park. The vehicle was reportedly shaking, raising the officers’ suspicions. When they approached and opened the vehicle, they allegedly found Halilu sexually abusing the minor. The suspect was arrested, while the girl was rescued and taken for medical attention, according to the police account.
Preliminary investigations reportedly indicated that the suspect had allegedly lured the girl to the same location on several occasions and sexually abused her inside the vehicle. Police further alleged that he threatened to harm her if she told anyone about the abuse. A medical examination reportedly found that the girl was approximately three months pregnant. The police said she was receiving medical care and undergoing further assessment.
In the latest reports located for this article, Halilu remained in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations. The FCT Police Command said he would be charged in court after the investigation was completed. However, the reports reviewed did not confirm that he had been arraigned or provide details of any court proceedings as of October 12, 2026. The girl’s identity has not been publicly disclosed in the reports reviewed. Protecting the privacy of a child who may have experienced sexual abuse is essential.
In a separate incident, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, was found dead in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified by police as Angela Defa Jacob. The incident reportedly occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, within Esan West Local Government Area. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated by the Edo State Police Command.
According to Edo State Police Command spokesperson Eno Ikoedem, the command received a report at about 8 p.m. on October 5, 2026, concerning the lecturer’s death. Police said Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel and engaged the services of Jacob, whom the police described as a commercial sex worker. According to the police account, the lecturer later sent the woman to purchase water. When she returned to the room, she reportedly found him lying dead. The incident was subsequently reported to the police, who began investigating the circumstances of his death.
The Edo State Police Command reportedly arrested three people in connection with the incident:
* Angela Defa Jacob, the woman who was with the lecturer.
* The owner of the hotel.
* The hotel manager. Police said the three were in custody while investigations continued.
Uwuigbe’s remains were deposited at the mortuary of Oriaifo Memorial Hospital. Their arrest does not, by itself, establish that they caused his death or committed an offence. The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ambrose Alli University confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident happened outside the university campus. The institution also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
As of October 12, the latest reports located for this article indicated that the police investigation was continuing, with the three individuals reportedly arrested in connection with the case. The reports reviewed did not establish an officially confirmed cause of death, nor did they confirm that anyone had been charged or arraigned in court over the incident. Although some reports linked the death to an alleged sexual encounter, the available information does not establish that the encounter caused Uwuigbe’s death. The cause and any potential criminal responsibility remain matters for the investigation to determine.
The Abuja case concerns allegations of repeated sexual abuse of a child, with police reporting that the victim was found to be pregnant. The suspect remained in custody in the latest reports reviewed, pending the conclusion of investigations. The Edo case concerns the unexplained death of a university lecturer in a hotel room. Three people were reportedly arrested as police investigated the circumstances, but the cause of death and any criminal responsibility had not been publicly established in the reports reviewed. Both cases underline the importance of thorough investigations, protection for vulnerable people and the need to distinguish allegations from facts established through due process.
NaijaParrot will continue to monitor the cases for verified updates from the relevant police commands and other official sources.
