2027: UMAHI SAYS TINUBU’S PROJECTS COULD CHANGE SOUTH-EAST VOTING PATTERN
By NaijaParrot October 23, 2026
ABUJA, NIGERIA — Minister of Works David Umahi has expressed confidence that the South-East will approach the 2027 presidential election differently, arguing that projects and federal appointments under President Bola Tinubu have changed the region’s relationship with the Federal Government. Umahi made the remarks while discussing the administration’s infrastructure investments and the political choices facing voters in the region ahead of the next general election. According to reports by ARISE News, the minister said the South-East’s strong support for Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election was influenced by concerns about marginalisation. He argued that Tinubu’s policies, appointments and ongoing projects could affect how voters assess the administration in 2027.
The minister has repeatedly urged South-East residents to support Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing federal road construction and rehabilitation projects across the region. Among the projects highlighted in previous statements are the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, the Afikpo–Uturu–Okigwe road and other major transport routes intended to improve connectivity between communities and commercial centres. Umahi has maintained that such investments should be considered when residents assess the Federal Government’s performance. However, the completion, quality and practical benefits of individual projects remain important considerations for the public.
The South-East remains an important part of the national political landscape, with voters expected to consider candidates, party platforms, economic conditions, security, infrastructure and other concerns during the election. Umahi has argued that the region should look beyond regional sentiment and consider political alliances across the country. He has also expressed confidence that Tinubu’s support in the zone will increase compared with the 2023 election. His position represents the minister’s political assessment; it does not establish how voters across the five South-East states will ultimately vote. Voters will make their own decisions when the election takes place.
As political parties prepare for the 2027 general election, debates over federal projects, representation and the distribution of national resources are likely to remain central to campaign discussions. Whether the projects and appointments cited by Umahi translate into increased support for Tinubu will depend on voters’ experiences and choices across the region.
