2027: TINUBU CAMPAIGN SPOKESPERSON LISTS REASONS NIGERIANS SHOULD GIVE PRESIDENT SECOND TERM

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Segun Sowunmi, a spokesperson for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, has urged Nigerians to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, arguing that a second term would give the administration an opportunity to consolidate its economic reforms and accelerate national development. Sowunmi made the appeal at a press conference on Thursday, saying Nigeria should maintain its current policy direction rather than abandon reforms introduced since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

According to Sowunmi, continuity in government could help deepen the administration’s economic policies, attract investment, strengthen public finances and expand opportunities for Nigerians. He argued that the next phase of the administration should focus on translating policy decisions into practical improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens. Sowunmi said priorities should include increased investment, greater domestic production, industrial growth, improved infrastructure, more opportunities for young people and a broader distribution of prosperity.

The campaign spokesperson pointed to major policy changes under Tinubu, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market. Supporters of the reforms argue that they are intended to improve government revenue, strengthen economic management and create conditions for long-term investment. However, the policies have also contributed to financial pressure on households and businesses, particularly through higher living costs. The extent to which the reforms have improved ordinary Nigerians’ living standards remains an important issue in the debate over the administration’s performance.

Sowunmi also called for sustained investment in electricity, education, healthcare and infrastructure, arguing that these sectors are essential to economic growth and improved living standards. He highlighted opportunities for states to develop their electricity markets under the Electricity Act 2023 and pointed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as one initiative intended to expand access to tertiary education. He maintained that young Nigerians need better access to education, technical skills, finance and business opportunities to participate meaningfully in the economy.

The spokesperson linked economic development to security, saying farmers, traders and businesses need safer conditions to operate, invest and create jobs. He argued that stronger security institutions should accompany efforts to address the economic and social factors contributing to insecurity. Nevertheless, the campaign’s case for a second term will be assessed against the experiences of Nigerians, including their concerns about food prices, transport costs, employment, electricity supply and personal security.

Sowunmi’s appeal forms part of the political argument for continuity as the ruling All Progressives Congress prepares for the 2027 presidential election. While the campaign spokesperson believes another term would allow Tinubu to consolidate his policies, voters will have the opportunity to assess the administration’s record, the results of its reforms and the alternatives presented by other candidates. The central question ahead of the election will be whether Nigerians believe the administration’s policies have delivered sufficient progress and whether its plans for a second term adequately address their concerns.
