2027: MAKINDE UNVEILS VISION FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY AND SECURITY REFORMS

Lagos, Nigeria | Politics

Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has called for a fundamental reset of Nigeria’s economy, education system, security architecture and political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde made the call in a video address at the launch of the Makinde-Daura Resetter Agenda in Lagos on Saturday, October 24. The initiative is being promoted by the Alliance for Progressive Movement and its allies as part of efforts to mobilise support for the proposed presidential ticket of Makinde and former Department of State Services Director-General, Lawal Daura.

The governor argued that improvements in economic indicators would mean little if ordinary Nigerians continued to experience hunger and financial hardship. He compared the situation to a household whose head boasts about having savings while family members remain hungry and unable to meet their needs. Makinde said Nigeria needed economic policies that translated national resources and financial gains into better living conditions for citizens.

His proposed RESET agenda focuses on rebuilding the economy, reforming education, strengthening national security and improving the country’s political and social environment.

Makinde has identified insecurity and inadequate educational opportunities as major challenges requiring attention. Under his proposed agenda, he says education should equip young Nigerians with the skills and knowledge needed to participate meaningfully in the economy.

On security, the governor has advocated changes to Nigeria’s security architecture and approaches that address the underlying causes of violence and criminality. He has also called for an economy that can support businesses, create jobs and allow people to work and travel without persistent security fears.

These are proposals associated with his campaign platform and would require detailed policies and implementation if his party wins the election.

At the Lagos launch, the campaign group said it wanted electioneering to focus more on substantive policy discussions than rallies and entertainment. The group’s representatives highlighted unemployment, insecurity, rising living costs and public accountability as issues they believe should shape the 2027 election debate.

Laja Adeoye, the APM’s Lagos State governorship candidate, also called for inclusive governance and urged voters not to exchange their permanent voter cards or votes for short-term payments.

The organisers said they intended to expand mobilisation beyond Lagos and the South-West, seeking support across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

The launch comes as political parties and campaign groups begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. Makinde has presented the RESET agenda as an alternative to the economic and governance direction of the current Federal Government.

The Tinubu administration, meanwhile, has defended its reforms as necessary measures intended to improve public finances and establish a foundation for longer-term economic growth. The competing positions place the economy, security, education and citizens’ living conditions at the centre of the emerging political debate.

Voters will ultimately be able to assess the parties’ proposals, records and commitments as the election approaches.
