2027 ELECTION: KWANKWASO SAYS APC WILL REGRET POLITICAL DECISIONS ON ELECTION DAY

By NaijaParrot October 16, 2026

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the party may realise the consequences of its political decisions when Nigerians head to the polls in the 2027 general elections. Kwankwaso, who is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate alongside presidential candidate Peter Obi, made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday. His comments came amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several state governors publicly expressing support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.

The former Kano governor questioned why so many governors were aligning themselves with Tinubu ahead of the next presidential election. According to Kwankwaso, the growing political alliance could reflect concerns among some governors about their ability to secure electoral victories independently. He also suggested that the President’s reliance on governors demonstrated the importance of their political support to the APC’s re-election plans. Kwankwaso argued that political endorsements alone would not necessarily determine the outcome of the election, stressing that voters would ultimately have their say at the ballot box.

Kwankwaso identified insecurity, poverty and the difficult economic conditions facing many Nigerians as major issues that could influence voting decisions in 2027. He expressed particular concern about insecurity in northern Nigeria, where violence has forced residents in some communities to abandon their homes. According to him, many citizens are struggling with circumstances that political leaders must address, warning that public dissatisfaction could have consequences for the ruling party. He maintained that the concerns of ordinary Nigerians should receive greater attention as political parties prepare for the next general elections. KWANKWASO

The NDC vice-presidential candidate also expressed confidence in his party’s prospects, claiming that its presidential ticket had attracted considerable attention in different parts of the country. He described Peter Obi as a popular political figure in southern Nigeria and argued that the party was also building support in the North. Kwankwaso maintained that the opposition had assembled a team capable of presenting an alternative to the current administration. However, these assessments reflect his political position, and the actual level of public support for the competing parties will need to be tested through credible polling and, ultimately, the election results.

During the television interview, Kwankwaso also voiced concerns about the possibility of electoral malpractice in the forthcoming elections. He alleged that some political figures had made comments suggesting that election results could be manipulated. However, the remarks reported from the interview do not, on their own, establish that electoral fraud has occurred or will occur. The concerns underline the importance of transparent voting procedures, effective election monitoring and the timely publication of credible results. As preparations for the 2027 general elections continue, the conduct of political parties, the performance of public institutions and the issues that matter most to voters are expected to remain central to public debate. For now, Kwankwaso’s remarks add to the increasingly sharp political exchanges between the opposition and the ruling party ahead of the next electoral contest.
