2027: ADELEKE BACKS ACCORD LAWMAKERS TO PURSUE THEIR OWN POLITICAL AMBITIONS AMID TINUBU ALLIANCE

OSOGBO, OSUN STATE — Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed that his political alliance with supporters of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections will not prevent Accord Party candidates from contesting legislative positions on the party’s platform. The governor’s position clarifies the boundaries of the emerging cross-party coalition established to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election, while allowing participating political parties to maintain their separate interests in the National Assembly and state legislative elections. Adeleke, who recently emerged as the Osun State coordinator of Tinubu’s presidential re-election campaign, said the alliance was designed specifically for the presidential contest and should not be interpreted as a merger of the participating parties.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Osun State Presidential Campaign Council in Osogbo, the governor explained that members of the coalition remained free to support candidates of their respective parties in legislative elections. He said the partnership bringing together political structures associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Accord Party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was intended to secure support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition. According to Adeleke, the arrangement does not extend to senatorial, House of Representatives or State House of Assembly elections. The clarification means Accord candidates can continue pursuing their legislative ambitions independently of the coalition’s presidential objective, while participating members work towards the alliance’s agreed goal of supporting Tinubu.

The governor’s position follows an earlier declaration by Accord Party National Assembly and State House of Assembly candidates in Osun State, who expressed support for his role in Tinubu’s re-election campaign. The candidates, speaking through their co-chairman, Osun State House of Assembly Speaker Adewale Egbedun, pledged to mobilise their political structures and grassroots supporters towards securing votes for the president. Egbedun said the candidates remained aligned with Adeleke’s political leadership and would work with him to advance the coalition’s presidential objective. The declaration demonstrated the willingness of the candidates to participate in the presidential arrangement while retaining their identities as Accord representatives.

Adeleke’s appointment as Tinubu’s campaign coordinator in Osun has attracted attention because the governor belongs to Accord rather than the ruling APC. The expanded campaign structure also includes prominent politicians affiliated with other parties, reflecting efforts to build a broader political coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election. At the Osun campaign council’s inauguration, Adeleke expressed confidence in the coalition’s capacity to mobilise substantial support for Tinubu. He reiterated the commitment to deliver more than 1.5 million votes for the president in the state, a target previously announced by the governor. However, the coalition’s presidential focus leaves the participating parties with separate interests in the legislative contests, where candidates will continue seeking electoral support under their respective party platforms.

The arrangement places Adeleke in a position of coordinating support for Tinubu’s re-election while maintaining his political leadership within Accord. It also highlights the distinction between cross-party cooperation for a presidential candidate and the competition that will continue among political parties for legislative seats. Although the alliance brings together members of different political organisations for the presidential election, Adeleke’s clarification indicates that it does not automatically require those parties to abandon their own candidates in other contests.

The development is likely to remain an important feature of political discussions in Osun as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections. For now, the governor has maintained that support for Tinubu at the presidential level can coexist with the independent political ambitions of Accord candidates seeking legislative offices.
